I mentioned this project elsewhere, but here is the thread for it.
Conrail 7499 is a former Lehigh Valley GP18, #305. It seems like it was a very photogenic patch-out, and it hanged around the northern New Jersey area, so I figure its a good choice for a model.
I'm starting with an old P2K model.
Improvements so far include-
Plano Intake Grills
Winterization Hatch (it didn't come with the model, but I suspect it should have)
Roof-top bell
Air Filter box
Modified forward intake fan with cut-down shroud
Modified horn (stand in).
There are some challenges, namely the horn, the paint, and the fuel tank.
The prototype had a cut down fuel tank. This wouldn't be a problem except that in order to cut it back, I'd have to cut through the motor mount on the back end. I'm debating whether or not I'm enough of a purist to do that.
The horn appears to be a modified Leslie horn, or something else special. Either way, no one appears to make a horn like it, so I'll have to modify my own. I used the kit's horn and relocated it to the proper location on the cab. I then just reversed the horn bell to approximate the prototype's. Its press fit in, so i'll just push it out when I find a better horn.
Apparently, LV paint is a mystery, though I did find one website with several suggestions on how to mix paint to achieve the LV's later Cornell red, which is more red than maroon.
Unfortunately, one of the clips on the shell broke, so the deck sags a little. I'll have to fix that.
The Plano Intakes are pretty cool.
