Hello all, I am a big fan of B units and had an FP45 B built for me many years ago to go with my FP45 Super fleets. That unit is still in my collection but I decided it was time I built another one myself for a special FP45 A B A set that will get a custom paint job later on. Here is the one I have built for this project. I started with an F45 and an FP 45 Cutting the SF unit was a tough decision because it was a mint condition shell. Quick test fit on the frame checking for the correct length Adding reinforcement material to hold the shells together and keep them square. This material was added to hold the discs in place that will fill in the fan holes. More test fitting on the frame. I made up a template from card stock to fill the small gaps so I could use as little Bondo as possible. This is the filler piece made from the template using styrene. Fillers in place. This shows things are still needing a bit of work but not nearly what it was before they were added. Fan area closed up nice and tight. Off to the body shop for a bit of work. Body work complete now it's on to the paint shop for some primer. Out of the paint shop and back to fabrication where the body is fitted to the frame. Unit was approved by QC and is ready for paint and graphics. Paulie

Thank you. A lot of these projects have gone on hold for a bit because I want to build a cabinet to put everything in when finished so that is the next thing to get done then it will be back to finishing this and some others as well. Love the DT&I as well as the GT. I am from the Detroit area originally and grew up on those two roads. My brother has my GT (Ex MP) SD40-2 repaint and my DT&I GP40-2 along with my GT & DT&I 86 foot box cars. They reside on his layout he is building to keep them active. Paulie

i like it. Several years ago I made several GE P40/AMD103 B units to run in an A-B-B-A lashup. Never really finished them except for teh shells.
Question though, how come you didn't blank out the radiator openings on the part that was added?

Hey Steve, Those were left there because I was not real confident that I could remove them well enough to get good clean square lines for any new body work that would have been needed and didn't want that section to look sloppy.
I would be interested in seeing your units if you have any pictures of them.

Notnsure what era you intend these to be for but you could claim that those radiator grills are for a HEP generator.

These units will be painted in a custom paint scheme that will be NFL related based on the Bachmann Hawthorne Village theme so the era is not an issue however I am still interested to know what a HEP generator is. Nice work, Paulie, your splicing job is excellent! Thank you very much. I was really trying to be careful with this one and get it looking believable. This is the one I had built for me several years ago which I am happy to have and will always keep. The builder used two FP45's for it rather than an F45 and FP 45 like I used. He did a super job on matching the paint and stripes with the A Units which are stock Athearn BB as well as adding the grab irons to it. Again I really like it and it is the one that inspired this new one I did. Paulie

HEP stands for Head End Power, its a separate generator in a passenger locomotive that provides power to the coaches. That keeps all the power from the prime mover for the traction motors. I dont know if you were planning on using these for passenger or freight.

I still have i think 2 shells and have thought about doing another one and learning from my first builds making another but much better. and what i mightt, mighttttt paint them.

I dont know if you were planning on using these for passenger or freight. Well then with the paint job that this ABA set will get I will say it would be used on a passenger special so there is the reason for the HEP. Thank you for the information and the justification for the radiators still being on the unit. Both A Units will retain there generators in there stock position as back up to the B unit. Learning all the time! Thank you. Paulie
