and here is an sd9 i'm working on changing from roller bearings to friction bearing housings as you'll note by the missing bearing caps and the 2 new friction housings that are being built, it will also receive mars lights on both ends, and i will redo the end ladders so they actually stand off the body, decided to stick to one road only so wont be doing the Cascade Northern this will keep me more focused on the primary road so here are the 1st 2 pictures more to follow as I have time enjoy

Just a quick thought, but if you do move to the 60's, you could still use the SG on it. HEP was still a bit off yet, it could be protection power or even a branchline/secondary line passenger unit.
Any particular reason your going to friction bearings? I don't recall seeing SD7s or 9s with the bearing boxes.

The sloped and square journal boxes on older EMDs are not plain bearings. They were an early version of oil lubricated rollers. I have seen a BRC GP9 with true friction (plain) bearings.
Athearn has made that error. They list some of the Genesis B&M GP9 as having plain bearings. I have been around many of that class, and can confirm that they are Hyatt roller bearings.
