This is an older project, that was built years back for a friend in Ottawa, while I was there, but never made it to his layout. Started as an Athearn SD40-2, and has had Cannon cab, nose and subbase added. Also from Cannon are the exhaust, inertial hatch and blower housing, and rad grills. The snow shields, bell and horn and steps are from MBE. Detail Associates supplied the mu stands, plow and hoses, as well as the open fan grills. The fan blades underneath are stip styrene mounted on a round center. The underframe was filed down and Evergreen styrene channel run along the side and the ends cut and blocks added so the couples boxes now mount the shell to the frame. Now I have to find the window glass, and figure out how to repair the front door, which has a small break in it, bigger challenge will be to match the paint.....

Well you get a thumbs up from me. That would not have been meant for Fern Leroux would it? I need to get one of those done proper for my collection one day. I am happy with the look of mine, but it was started by my Dad and given to me as a gift...and he based it on the SD40 instead of the -2
Look forward to seeing it complete.

Yes, was meant for Fern. Lost touch when I moved. Think its the only ON unit that I have around anymore. I'll touch up this one, then not sure what I'll do with it. Lol, I;m trying to limit myself, to late 60s, and pre dash-2 units. Plan sitting here to do the 4 switchers that ON had, and cover all the paint schemes, surprisingly few photos of them however.

I have lots of pics of 1600, but since it's been in North bay forever, I am sure that's not your issue. If you have anything you are looking for let me know.
Fern had my RS3's pulling my ONR crane (green progressive) on his layout for a couple of years.

Nice work on that athearn ON unit, some weathering and she'll be a gem ! I've relished the idea of an ONR SD unit but that idea will have to wait. And a question for you, do you have a pic of how you modified and mounted the shell to the frame via the couplers ? I have one dusty athearn that I'm stuck on how to go about it for the more prototypical look. ( annexing the side mounts) thx in advance if you do and again nice build.

lol, yeah I realize its a detail, that probally isn't seen, but I know its there. Unfortunatly, I don't have any dimensions to work from so its mostly, "I know its a channel frame", and just kind of make it fit under the shell

Those photos help a tonne!! I second the notion on the work put into the chassis, I'd say it was worth the extra effort.
