Being a Seaboard Coast Line guy, I learned SLSF motive power was present on Florida SCL rails quite often. Some of those run-through units were of the U30B variety. Having an affinity for U-Boats led me to model SLSF 846 (I also have the L&N XR unit) This model is the Atlas offering with the following details added: • Cal-Scale Leslie S5T Horn 190-566 • Custom Finishing Speed Recorder #196 • Details West Pilots PL130 • DW Pyle Gyralight HL-115 • DW Sunshades SV-365 • DW Rotary Beacon "Strato-light" RB-106 • DW Wheel Slip Modulator WS-350 • PollyScale GTW Morency Orange Weathering was applied with a combo of Brigdon Weathering Powders, and acrylic washes. All light fixtures are illuminated with surface mount (SMT) LEDs; the decoder is a QSI Titan.

I am really not a GE fan but this is pretty cool. Did the real one have the XR on the side?

That's a good looking engine and quite a change from the SCL.

I am really not a GE fan but this is pretty cool. Did the real one have the XR on the side? Yes you can find several photos of the prototype online. "XR" represented GE upgrades to the U-Boat family of locomotives. The XR stood for eXtra Reliability. The GE "XR" Series was initially part of an early basis for the later succeeding "Dash 7" series of diesel locomotives built by GE from around 1972 to 1975, and the "XR" series itself was practically GE's response to their rival EMD's "Dash 2" line. Several "XR" Series U30B units built with longer warranties, were sold to the Frisco railroad in 1972, while other models (such as the U30C-XR) were eventually sold to the Louisville And Nashville railroad and Rock Island later on. Most later-production U-Boat units produced shortly before the Dash 7's introduction (such as the U30B and later U36B) were initially part of the "XR" Series; yet the "XR" Series itself didn't have any external differences, but rather many numerous internal differences (like the SD40-2). You can also find photos of the L&N U30C 1499; the model was also released by Atlas. Thank you folks for your kind comments. Carl
