I got a kato sd40-2 in UP paint for xmas (37-2806 #4202 w/o DB) from a relative. Since it can't be returned I figured I would strip the paint put a cannon cab and HH on it to do a NS (ex Southern) SD40-2 but the one I got for xmas has no dynamic brake. And kato SD40-2 shells are sold out on Kato's site. And there seems to be very few around period. Is it possible to put an Athearn SD40-2 shell on it? Or would I be better off to put it on ebay and look for one with a DB?

The Athearn shell will fit in the Kato frame. The dynamic hatch for an Athearn SD-40-2 will fit on the Kato shell with minor modification. Either way you win! I answered this question a while back and included some pictures at dieseldetailer.proboards.com/thread/13515/athearn-sd40-db-hatch-kato . Let me know if you have further questions. Cheers, Mike

Nice work Mike, Question(s). I actually have a athearn SD40-2 db hatch on hand. Not the bulging type in your photos but I think its correct for the NS SD40-2. You did have to cut the area out for the DB blister, right? What type of steps did you use?

I didn't have to touch the shell. I cut off and filed the four tabs inside the DB housing and cut off the end tabs. It will slip right on. The bulge is an extended range DB. The regular DB hatch is the same on the inside. I glued my hatch on after I got it to fit. I drilled through the hatch and the shell to install the Cannon fans.
Thanks, Mike

I have a couple of Kato BN shells with dynamic brakes if you wanted to just trade shells. My railroad does not use dynamics. I would only be interested in an 88" nose though.

Hi Guys (Vince and Craig),
Kato HO SD-40-2 shells were made in three flavors so far. The 1st run(early) had 81" noses and wire grilles. The 2cd run(snoot) had 116" noses and corrugated screens. These two runs shared the same walkways. With a couple of small mods, any length Cannon nose can be installed on either run. The third run(mid) was a whole different beast. It has ditch lights on the nose walkway different handrails and grabs, nose lights or cab top lights. They also featured DCC ready PC boards with the flashing ditch lights feature. These shells were both available but are sold out. They are the only Kato shells with an 88" nose from Kato. I hope this helps clear up the confusion.
Cheers, Mike
