I just couldn't like with the stock Kato and it's lack of correct details, so I built this unit. A list of things I did: Switched to an isolated cab Custom roof details Grab irons- BLMA/Custom Lift rings- Trainworx/BLMA Cab Shades- BLMA Wipers- BLMA Rear frame cut out and Trainworx grills installed Mirrors: BLMA/Trainworx Cut Levers: Trainworx Relocated the Rear Sand Hatches- Atlas mu hoses- Trainworx mu cable- Atlas

Very nice Karl. I wish when I was in N-scale they had all these details available. I might have stayed in N instead of moving to HO.
Now if Brian could find a way to build the N couplers that would be a great great improvement after all the other details are added...

The couplers bug me, I hope we get an N Scale option that looks better in the near future. I've tried Z Scale couplers on a few engines, but I wanted the reliability of the N Scale version on this one. It's going to be pulling some big freights.

Hello Karl this is a very impressive build! The detailing really brings it to life!
I'm really liking the paint job, and I'm interested to know: if this is a custom paint job, which paints you used, and if you started with an undec or had to strip factory paint. Or did you have to match to the factory body color where the Trainworx grilles and other details are installed?
Since you mentioned Z-scale couplers, I'd also be curious about which ones you have tried. I am switching to the Lee English (Bowser) couplers, they are much closer to scale size and they do not have the 'slinky' effect. I can pull very long trains with them.
Thanks, Ed

Ed, For the long hood I stripped a BNSF unit, the frame was partially repainted and the cab was an undec NS cab. I used PollyScale GN Orange and Steam Power Black. You will be able to see the full build later this year in N Scale Railroading.
I've been using MT905s, but I get too many pull aparts compared to the oversized MT N Scale Couplers. I can't wait for a readily available alternative. I'll look into the ones you are trying, thanks! Karl

Thanks Ed, If the NZT couplers don't come out pretty quick I may try to use Sketch-up to design a coupler box that has the outside dimensions of a 1015 coupler, but will hold 903 coupler internals.
But the links you provided are making me think more about the LE couplers...

Man, N Scale ? Beautiful locomotive, I have a hard enough time working with the HO stuff I don't know how you N scale guys do such intricate work like this. Very well done.
