Sometimes, this hobby is great... I was introduced to a fellow hobbier from Sarnia ON, and he needed help with wiring up his Kato SD40-2s, converting from those gaud awful contact strips to full truck wiring. He attempted the conversion himself but the soldering was a bit off on the circuit board and some of the circuits were bridged. Anyway, I was just working towards converting these 2 stock Kato UP units, when I gave hime an update at a recent show of the work I was doing, and while looking at some of the wares on his table, noticed alot of weathered freight cars that were...awesome! Anyway I asked him where he got them from and he said he did them himself...so, he's become my drug dealer for weathering with a steady stream of cars to weather in exchange for actually doing something with his UP units, changing them into mongrel LTEX units 8935 and snoot 3415. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1406168www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=173706I will finish decalling them, and I'll leave it up to Jim to finish the weathering, I think he has the skillz!

I think LTEX does the ugliest patch jobs on the planet but they do look good on a model RR. Please post some pictures after your friend weathers them.

The black patch-outs aren't that bad, the Soo did something very similar with all of the "bandit patch" former Milwaukee units. I think what really makes the LTEX units so ugly is the simple lettering logo's that they seem to hap-hazardly put on the sides. In any case they're ugly.
Nice work on the model patches though.

What did you use for the LTEX lettering? This pair looks great.

They are custom decals. I needed 2 sets and the microscale LTEX only has a pair.

Oh They will! If you look at the top photo of the BN hopper, the one who did that owns these SDs and will do the honors of beating them up!
Yeah, unless there's a huge upswing in freight, those units in Waresboro are done for...
