Lots of well executed work here. This is a sharp looking locomotive.

A bit more progress: some more etchings installed, brake chain set up (A-line part), horn installed (Cal-scale, K3 all bells forward, not visible on this side), ditch lights drilled out and painted (will be lit with SM LED's and magnet wire), and that bad ass plow has been painted (using the new bottle of CN lettering grey #17 for the V-stripes). The wheelsets on this Athearn SD50 chassis were 40", so I had to replace them with a set of 42" ones I had on hand to match the prototype. Also done was some more sanding (including the cab front), patching, and installing the V-gutter on top of the cab. As the Kaslo SD60F shell incorrectly has the SD50F style engine room roof, I could have filled all the groves in to be smooth, but decided to do one of the two or so units that received an SD50F style roof during shopping. At the suggestion of a friend, I scribbled on its identity shop-style, for an in-progress shot: Who made the ditch lights?

Thx guys.
Canadaandsouthern, the ditch lights came as part of the resin parts package with the shell. I'd much rather drill those resin ones out than a pair of metal or brass ones, that's for sure!

Great looking units!
I'd like to know about those Q fans... did those come with the kit? Any info on those would be appreciated very much.

Great looking units! I'd like to know about those Q fans... did those come with the kit? Any info on those would be appreciated very much. The Q-fans came with the kit. The fan base, shroud and blades were all cast in to the shell, with the separate stainless steel fan grill. I prefer to add the grill to the shell before painting to get a resin-to-stainless steel bond instead of paint-to-stainless-steel, but that makes painting trickier if you want the fan blades silver or aluminum. They look nice, but are quite fragile and have tiny mounting tabs (which are somewhat useless). To get mine to the right height, I put a bit of 0.020" sheet styrene (cut round) underneath, and fashioned a conduct pipe out of copper wire as per prototype photos. I then carefully bent the tabs down, as well as the ends of the wire that radiates out from the centre, gave it a very slight dish (the real Q-fans are relatively flat on top, with the grill sort of suspended over the housing) and glued the middle to the styrene and tried to glue the tabs to the insides. The Kaslo F59PH grills have bigger tabs which are much more effective, along with separate fan assemblies, but the Kaslo SD60F and SD40-2F kits are as above with the whole fan sans grill cast on to the shell.

MrDan,
I'd like to understand better how you attached the frame to the shell? I'm getting into detailing and as I'm seeing how you modified the frame, I didn't see any way to attach. This does look great!!!
Thanks in advance, Scott CMO - Richmond Terminal Railway

Scott, I modified a few things to allow the coupler pockets to hold on the shell, as is common with many models these days. The frame isn't too heavy, and the shell is thick resin so should hold up quite well. I made sure the pilot ends were glued on with a more than liberal amount of glue, filed parts of the frame and bottoms of the shell to allow a good fit, and notched the Kaslo coupler pockets to clear the Athearn frame properly.
Maybe on a future project I'll think about incorporating some sort of secondary securing system, like drilling holes in the frame for screws that run into styrene blocks glued to the insides of the shell.

Going to be building one of these SD60F's, did it come with the ditch lights? What detail parts did you have to buy seperately? Any parts you changed out for better pieces?

Steve, he mentioned in this thread, that the resin ditch lights came with the kit.... Hopefully, he can tell you the rest, if he's not one of the guys who left.

I still stop by every now and then, but as some have seen, most of my work is diverted to another group. The ditch lights come with the kit, but the kit I bought through SAR was missing them. An email to Grant got the missing parts sent in the mail in short order. Much easier drilling out resin ditch lights than metal ones. I wasn't impressed with the too-narrow plow so had to widen it, but you can probably get a DW part that matches. You'll also want a horn (none provided, you'll want a K3L type, Bowser or MbyE), and perhaps a new bell (Atlas makes some nice ones that I buy from a guy on eBay).
