The SD40's that have the brake stand at the rear of the long hood. Do those stands have an open back or are they enclosed on all four sides?
Thanks

The brake stands should be solid all the way around. The Cannon part is correct for these. No 40-series had a ratchet stand at the rear of the long hood that I'm aware of. The ratchet stands were limited to the earlier Geeps.

Some had the brake stand by the walkway edge by a rail stanchion, and those were closed in on the back.

Brian,
Just climbed on one and checked and it's closed in the back...at least on a high hood SD40.

Thanks all.
I got my answer yesterday. My friend Mike Roberts (locomotive rebuilder) sent me a couple photos of the Utah Railway SD40's he used to own. The back is open. The Cannon part is 100% correct. The stand appears to be a large piece of channel steel with a cap on the top.

I've seen a few with I channel on each side and saw a few with a single beam up through the middle. All of them however were open on the back side. One former Conrail unit had diamond tread plate on the front and sides. It was bolted at the bottom of the walkway, I guess getting to that had to be a pain.
