I'm currently building an electrive locomotive based on GM 1975. It will have some different details as the prototype. No dual control stands and no rear numberboards. This locomotive is clearly fictional.
I already built the cab and short hood. Next is the long hood and I need a Kato SD40-2 running gear and side sill.

I am keen to see this, the Milwaukee electrified line always intrigued me as did the GM6C so this could be good.
I have a half finished kato SD40-2 project that I'm looking to offload if your interested?

This is what I wish it to look like. I finished the cab and nose. The sides are in progress, but I'm waiting for Cannon doors, fans and grilles. So not much I can do now.  |

General Electric pitched 3000 HP electrics (the equivalent of an SD40-2) to the MILW... too bad they didn't bite!!!

I don't remember the exact history of the whole electric upgrade anymore, but GE essentially was going to GIVE the Milwaukee the locomotives and finance a lot of the infrastructure upgrades for them! The hope was that it would entice other railroads to look to electrics, would have been perfect timing with the oil crisis of the 70's coming down the pipe at everyone.
Too bad they didn't have the foresight to do it. I think by then the Milwaukee already decided they wanted to either be bought by someone or just pull out of the west coast completely.

Looks like you are doing the Hiawatha paint scheme on it, circa mid to late 80's. I'd like to see it in the original billboard scheme as well. Looking good!

I was looking at kit-bashing a version of a GM6C. My base point was going to be a Bluebox powered chassis as the GM6C and the EMD SD40-2 are the exact same length. Next was to cut off the sill and keep that so the body would have something to sit on. My problem came when trying to find a good EMD GP30 cab as the only ones I knew of made by Athearn were 2 piece and the roof came off. Great project!

Not really... I was busy guessing what exactly to do. The hardest part is working from photographs only. The pantographs were difficult, as they're mostly scratchbuilt. If you look closely, you can see they're not the same: The front one is for 3000V DC, the rear one is for 25kV/50Hz AC (in my world, the Milwaukee Road closed the gap and modernized the coast division with new AC catenary while concentrating all existing DC equipment east of Avery until they modernized the rocky mountain division as well)
