Doubt I will get to them in HO. My focus is N-Scale and getting my stuff together in preparation for my layout.

Updates are going to be way in the future. We are packing our house to move. We close on it this Wednesday. From now on for the rest of the year I will be working on the landscaping. The I still have to build the hobby room so I have somewhere to work again and that is going to take a long time as well.
I have not worked on these models since the Christmas break. Suffering a little burn out and putting more focus on my N-Scale projects.

Brian, I hope you finish your video tutoral some day. I feel like a fan of a TV show that got canceled before the season was over.

The desire is there, just not the motivation. With spring and summer here and getting the new house I have the motivation to finally get outside again.

Well, I have come to the realization that I cannot wait so long to get back to modeling. I am going to hold off on building my hobby room in the garage and simply set up the garage the way I have it now. When I get all the landscaping done and the house all settled in, then I can look at getting my room built. In the mean time, I will set it up so I can get back to modeling ASAP. Hopefully that will be some time in June.
I will get back to the QNS&L build. Going to the Savannah RPM meet, got me motivated again. Just needed to get around like minded modelers. I have already started planning the next big build. It will not be a Copper State Railway locomotive. It will be a Ferromex unit that is paying off time for UP barrowing a CSR unit.
The roster is changing a bit. I was going to add an SDP45, but decided against it. Instead that slot will be taken by an SD40 ex C&O/Utah Railway/EJ&E. At one time, a friend of mine took ownership of either all or a good many of the Utah Railway SD40's. So one of them made it to CSR. So the roster stands at 12 units still.
500 ex CNW SD40-2 501 ex UP Q equipped SD40-2 502 ex UP SD40-2 snoot 503 ex UP SD40-2 snoot 504 ex QNS&L/NREX SD40-2 505 ex QNS&L/NREX SD40-2 506 ex QNS&L/HLCX SD40-2 507 ex ? SD45 508 ex C&O/Utah Railway SD40 509 ex SP/UP SD40T-2 510 ex ? SD45 511 ex SP SD45
The SD45's are going to be a combination of three models. The frame and trucks will be from Athearn. The shell from P2K and the drive from Kato.
The SD40 will be from Kato and the truck side frames will be Athearn.
I have also decided to add a yard slug. This will be an ex SP slug built from a C628. A very good friend of mine has the Overland brass model of this and will loan it to me so I can use it as a reference for building my own.
I also have some 4 axle power. Still need to iron out the heritage. I have two GP38-2's and two GP35R's. One of the GP38-2's is from CN with the comfort cab. These units are for the two branch lines.
I have also reduced my route map to match the real SP/UP operations. I revised the write up on my web site. Lines west no longer exists. Basically the line service ends at the agricultural district in Goodyear, AZ. The track out to Welton is still there, but is no longer in service. There is no more service to the Palo Verde nuclear power plant. Those tracks were taken out after 911. All interchange with the UP happens in Eloy. The copper concentrate is not going to the LA docks. It is going south of the border to ports in Guaymas, Mexico.

I can't help it. I have to have an SDP45 on my roster. I like big power and this one falls right in with what I want. Also, it fits my criteria for having one. I am using Conrail #6670. It is currently sitting at the VA Transportation Museum. Probably never to see service again. thecrhs.org/Images/CR-6670-at-Roanoke-VA. Copper state railway will get it before it is decommissioned. So it only needs a once over and put into service on the CSR. So my roster is as follows now. Naturally this roster is in flux until it is all actually built. Highlighted and bold units are ones that are already built or currently in the process of being built and finished. 500 ex CNW SD40-2501 ex EL/CR/NS SDP45 502 ex UP SD40-2 snoot 503 ex UP SD40-2 snoot 504 ex QNS&L/NREX SD40-2 505 ex QNS&L/NREX SD40-2 506 ex QNS&L/HLCX SD40-2507 ex UP Q-equipped SD40-2 508 ex C&O/Utah Railway SD40 509 ex SP/UP SD40T-2510 ex SP SD45 511 ex SP SD45

So it only needs a once over and put into service on the CSR. I had a thought for you, Brian. Six of the EL SDP45s were included in the MK Rebuild program for SP in the mid-1990s. They were rebuilt with Dash-2 electronics and 16 cylinder 645s (among other things). Seems like UP parked the SD40M-2 fleet 3 or 4 years ago, so it is just as concievable that the CSR could pick up one (or several) of the SD40M-2s. I would think that these units would be more desirable as they would be more fuel efficient with the 16 cylinder blocks. The same logic would also apply to CSR #510 and #511, the ex-SP SD45s. Also, with the diverse origins of the SD40M-2 fleet, there are some great modelling potential as well. Just food for thought. Stored SD40M-2 (ex. SDP45)Chris

Chris,
Can you point me to some photos of these units?
Your scenario is much more convincing.

I found some photos on the espee info page.
SD40M-2 ex EL on the SP are #8691 to 8696. What is the current disposition of these units?
Also to my liking at the SD40M-2's rebuilt with the GP40 radiator. SP #8574-8582 & 8700. What is the disposition of these units?

I found that many of the SD40M-2s were stored at Sterling Rail Services in 2011/2012. I haven't seen any photos of these elsewhere since then. I think most, if not all of the ex-EL units ended up there. Some of the GP40 radiator units were there as well. The link below is a detailed video going over 8579 (incidentally unpatched as well).
With today's market for SD40s, they may have been worth more in scrap than as serviceable units and disposed of, but that is purely speculation on my part.

Brian, I did a little more digging, and seems like the majority of the SD40M-2 fleet was retired in 2010 and returned to their leaser. See the link below for roster info. Sounds like great CSR fodder to me. www.calcoastrails.com/roster/uprosterchanges.html

I forget the railroad, but supposedly a small company has bought or leased 4 former EL SDP45's that were rebuilt by MK. It was posted on a EL facebook group a few weeks ago.

brian, if you stuck with the CR version, would you be painting it like it is in the picture on your link? that would be some interesting how to videos.

I ordered an EL SDP45 today from Lombard Hobbies. Best prices I could find anywhere.
Chris, thanks for the info. Very good web site. Especially when I need to find retired units from UP. These SD40M-2's are definitely CSR fodder. I am going to grab two or three of them. One SDP45 car body and one or two of the SD45 car bodies with GP40 radiators. I thought I would ask also ont he Atlas Rescue Forum and found received this.
8691 to UP #2767 Stored as of 2012 (SP paint) 8692 to UP #2768 Stored as of 2011 (UP paint) 8693 to UP #2769 Stored as of 2011 (SP paint) 8694 Wrecked 11/2007 8695 to UP #2771 Stored as of 2012 (UP paint) 8696 to UP #2772 Stored as of 2011 (SP paint)
8574 to UP #2650 Stored as of 2013 (SP paint) 8575 to UP #2651 Stored as of 2013 (SP paint) 8576 to UP #2653 Stored as of 2010 (UP paint) 8577 to UP #2654 Stored as of 2013 (SP paint) 8578 retired 2/23/10; returned to lessor 8579 (not renumbered) Stored as of 2010 (SP paint) 8580 (not renumbered) Stored as of 2013 (SP paint) 8581 to UP #2657 Stored as of 2013 (SP paint) 8582 to UP #2658 wrecked/scrapped 12/2005 8700 to UP #2776 Stored as of 2010 (SP paint)
After looking at the link you posted, I find that many of the 85xx series units are retired. So plenty of fodder there. I could only find one of the SDP45's that is not in use. #8694 was wrecked. So that fits my criteria and is the one I will use.
Steve, I am going with the ex SP units. As Chris stated, it is a much more conceivable storyline.
