Another project has begun. This will be NS GP 38-3 5801. There are a few minor differences between 5801 and the rest of them, which is why I selected it. Some work has already been done.

What are the differences between the 5801 and the rest of the class?

The major differences are that 5801 had squared of filter boxes (all others are angled on the sides of the DB hatch) and the horn is in line with the Q fans where the later rebuilds had them offset towards the engineers side.

I took a look at this series on RRPictures - they vary a lot from one unit to the next, numbered in series. The dynamics range from the as-built gp38 unit with the paper filter on this model, the next in series - 5802 has the GP40-2 style dynamic on it! There are plenty of photos of these units.
Please continue to post, I'm very interested to see how you build this unit - especially how you will fill in that middle radiator fan hole. It's a trouble spot for me...
thanks for sharing your progress,
-bill

I'm really trying to convince myself not to build one of these, your not helping! Lol. Great work so far, keep it coming.

The engineer's side is like long like the GP40-2 and the fireman's side is akin to the GP38. Sent from my GT-I9100 using proboards

I didn't notice that when I was at the archives. 5801 was a high-hooded GP50, at that!

Was able to do a bit more work on the 38-3 over the last few days (among the other projects). I hope the pics speak for themselves but feel free to ask questions or comment. Here is a quick look an and unmodified DB hatch of a 50 and the 38-3 (5801 is different in many aspects from the rest of the fleet. NS changed the horn location and the type of filter box after 5801, which are the most noticeable changes) The most important part is the "beef up' the empty fan hole for the later application of sheet styrene. Without it, you run the risk of punching thru it with very little pressure. So, I just held up a piece of thick styrene, traced it and cut it out. It doesn't need to be perfect since it will be covered up. Then, you can beef it up from under the shell. Finally, a measured and precut piece of sheet styrene is added. Its super thin (as you can see the outline of the hole underneath). Be careful here because the "plastic weld" glue will distort your square fill panel since its so thin.

Thanks for posting these pictures - I can clearly see the asymmetrical DB hatch. This is a cool build and the fact that you can't get this model commercially makes it even better! Thanks for taking time to post -

Not a problem bud. As it progresses, I will continue to post updates. At the moment, its awaiting a few parts that I forgot to order initially.

Looks like your making good progress with this one too. I've been fighting the urge for a couple of years I've decided to build one of these too, it was just to tempting after seeing this post!

Its a fun build. I went a little more in depth with this than I had originally planned. What started as a quick build has morphed into changing out a lot of the stock Athearn parts (cab, nose, anti-climber, Smokey Valley handrails, etc.). The biggest point with the 38-3s is that make sure you have plenty of photos of the particular 38-3 you want to model because there a subtle differences between almost all of them of them. Since they are relatively new, there aren't many roof shots on the various photo websites that we all frequent. This particular 38-3 is going to be 5801. This was the first 38 to be rebuilt and has many differences from the other 38-3s

I'm aiming for #5824 because its a jice round number.
I'd already cut the nose off of my GP50 so I'll be adding a C&C nose but using a Kato cab. The paper air filter will be scratch built and the rest will just be adding details. I'm flying out to a ship in the Arabian Gulf tomorrow for ten weeks so this and a slightly freelanced MT-4 should keep me going til my next leave.

I actually used the Q fans from an SD70M (Athearn) that I had laying around. You can use Details Associates 48" Q fans (which is what I'll use to replace the ones I stole from my SD70M$

I'm having trouble finding the 48" fans. There are 52's available, but my regular sources are out of stock... Please let me know if you find some and I will purchase. This puts my build on hold for a bit...
thanks,
