I'm learning the ways of the high hood!!! I haven't spent a ton of time yet looking around details west site. I found Bob Harpe's article on modeling an NW SD40-2, very informative!!!! Pics have been great, and plentiful. Once I figure out the small things, the bigger picture will come on through!!!! ;D

After studying pics and the DW site, came down to this. #3234 either AH187 or AH191. #3214 AH251, #3218 AH175 or AH 328. The 3218 and 3234 are very elusive. 3218, I can tell its a 3 chime, triangle fashion, but unknown if the middle horn is facing rearwards or forwards, also the left horn is farther out then the right one, which DW doesn't carry.Could it be poss. its 3 chimes forward? The 3234, the choices I came up with is very close, I'm really leaning towards the AH191. On the high hoods, is it common to keep matched horns for each unit??? Also, if someone knows NS horns, please let me know if my "studying" has paid off!!! Thanks guys!!!

I made an article about a N&W SD40-2 here on the forum under EMD dash 2s.

The units will use DW nathan M5 airhorns, should be the 187. These are not totally correct as the chimes are not all facing forward, but it is as close as you will get. Overland made the correct ones, #9003, but they are hard to find. I believe that DW does make a K3 with all chimes forward, don't have the DW catalog to confirm this though. The #191 is a Leslie RS-5T-F, this was the standard air horn used by the N&W on almost any 2nd generation unit, as well as some first generation units. My experience with the Hi-Tech sunshades is that they are extremely fragile. I wish that they would do the same part in brass instead. That is another reason I like the N&W side of NS better, all weather windows and regular sunshades, which are mush sturdier! Christian

talking bout sunshades, am curious if anyone ever thought of using N scale sunshades from BLMA for the widecab EMD? Looks to be a fair alternative to the hitech part, plus being metal, and instals similar to the aline giving you a strong shade that wont fall off at a whim. Sure it may not be perfect, but, may look just as good?!?!

curiosty has me on this, the next time im at the hobby shop, going to try and match it up to see! They look like they would be the right length, from deflector to deflector, since theyre designed for the wide cab EMD's in N scale, thinkin it may work!

The SOU high hoods will carry either an all bells foward Nathan P3 or P5. Matched horns or even bell configurations can be very unusual at times. THis is a feature that makes modeling the Hood's fun. I've even seen two different Horns (1 Leslie 1 Nathan) with odd bell placements on some locos. (ie; NS 5101)
3214 has a P5(both ends) 3234 has a P5 (odd bell configuration) Could use DW's AH-369 3218 has a P3 (both ends)
Nathan P5 OMI: 9003 (discontinued) Kato F40PH RTA horn: 950044 Miniatures by Eric: H20 Details West (not all foward): AH-369
Nathan P3 Details Associates: 1603 (kit)
The Hi-Tech Shades aren't bad in my opinion. They are fragile as said before, which is somewhat of a downside, but look good, though.

It says it is an EOT hanger bracket. My guess is that they use that to hold an extra EOT.
