First of all I would like to thank Brian Banna, His YouTube series inspired me to start another detailing project. I for one am all for the young guns in the hobby to start actually building models, and not just pulling them out of the box and setting them on the track. Ok time to get off the soap box and start modeling. The prototype was originally a CEFX GP38-3 #3010, that was sent to the Louisville and Indiana Railroad. They have since sent the units Webtec's Milby Street Shop in Houston, Tx. This unit did not receive the LIRC typical Green and Yellow paint scheme. It now sports a PRR scheme that is a node to the heritage of the LIRC Line. The Prototype: www.flickr.com/photos/nordique72/8646115061/The model will use a Atlas GP38 shell and frame as the base for the model. I also changed out the dynamic break hatch to the correct prototype and added various other detail parts.
The Donor Unit:
After a quick bath in 91% Alcohol: After spending the afternoon applying detail parts I ended up with this: I am hoping to get the unit painted this week and work on the custom decals.

nice looking project. I really like the prototype. I hope I don't sound like a broken record, but I like seeing these modern rebuilds of 40-50 year old EMDs. Many on my favorite RR are now being rebuilt for the 2nd time.
How young do ya have to be to be a young gun? lol

With the school year ending and graduation I haven't gotten to work on this project much. But I thought I would share an updated photo of the unit.

Have you had a chance to work on this or get it finished?

Unfortunately no... I am trying to find a set of smokey valley handrails and still working on the custom decals.

Andy - nice project. You might be able to find a Microscale set of letters that matches that unit instead of going the custom route. I'm pretty sure you can find a red keystone around too. What is it about the prototype that makes this unit a dash 3? On the Smokey Valley rails, try this online store - they have the second gen EMD stanchions that you can mount and then bend your own brass rod. It's easy to do - you have the originals as a pattern www.toytrainheaven.com/.sc/ms/cat/HO%20Parts%20O-W--Smokey%20Valley/3The above is the Smokey Valley link. Detail Associates makes brass round wire in .015" diameter (#229-2505) that you will easily bend into the shape you need. Just some suggestions which would be less expensive than custom decals and a full Smokey kit... -bill
