I am looking at getting some surface mount LEDs for ditchlight use, and haven't found a good source for them. I've looked at the Ulrich and Richmond Control sites and the best pricing seems to be about $3.00 per LED, which is pretty expensive in my book. Is there a cheaper source for surface mount LEDs, without a significant quality drop?

EVAN DESIGNS ( www.modeltrainsoftware.com). You'll get a discount in bulk (that's how I buy), and they have 3 or 4 different sizes available, including "chip" and "micro" SMDs in a variety of hues. They also include an option for resistors already wired onto each LED, so that'll save you some money and time too. I use their smallest SMD for ditch lights, and the magnet wire leads they include really allows me to get them mounted prototypically. As far as quality, I haven't had any issues...and they ship FAST.

I second Erik on ledBaron. I just bought 100 for a little over $30 in an auction. He has a lot of neat stuff for modellers and lighting. He ships fast. My last order was here in 4 days. Faster than some US dealers.

I was buying the prewired warm white 0402 size from ledbaron on ebay as well, but I don't see that he lists them any more. (?) I found the 0402's fit in ditchlights and other applications easier than the 0603's.

I was recently looking into getting some LEDs from Ledbaron as well and also noticed the same thing. The recommended LEDs he sells (well used to sell), arent listed anymore. Anyone trying any of the others he has?

Just buy the colour you like and solder them. I got about 100 warm white on eBay, from China. It was about $10.
If I can successfully solder them, then anyone can!

That's what I ended up doing as well. Got one hundred of warm white 0402 on ebay for $10 with free shipping from China. Also ordered some red and green enamelled wire and learned how to solder them up myself for a fraction of the price.
An optivisor with a 7X lens was pretty much mandatory for me to see them, but I've been successful with every attempt so far.

I second this.........they have a smaller size called "pico" which is the smallest SMD LED you can get........around .025" x .031"........prewired........ The above pic is a "pico" size LED I used on the back (bottom) of a Details West rotary beacon. The pic below shows that it not only fits.....but works too.
