There has been talk on another forum I belong to about this locomotive.
No models ever made in either Brass or Plastic.
However..........I myself have thought about kitbashing a model or three.
Anyone else been thinking the same?

Overland made the model in brass (I have one) and I believe Alco Models also made one in brass. No plastic models ever though. I will dig it out tomorrow and post pictures of it if you would like?

Huh. Back when brass could still be considered "the good stuff." I've learned that sometimes Overland got details obviously wrong...anything on this model not correct? And of your 1000 or so projects, how far down the list is painting this animal?
I always kinda liked the look of the Pooches, but they got no love from anyone. Even the U34CH made it into a museum, but nobody shed a tear when these got scrapped. Reminds me of when a railroad museum gave up an E7 to go to scrap cuz everyone wanted to save steam engines.

Your only bet in getting these in plastic some day is probably a place like Kaslo, limited run resin kits. But even then there would have to be enough interest (and pre-purchased) for them to justify doing one.

I can see where they built it ontop of a U-boat.
Might be doable as a kitbash, but would be beyond my skills.

I remember seeing the last few on the Auto-Train when I used to live in Florida..........an old electrician that worked at the Sanford FL facility said they could really play hell on you when it came to the twin HEP set-up.......being three phase they would fall out of sync and it was a real problem to get them in sync again.

At one time in the late 80s I drew out what I thought would work for a plastic model. The drawings are long gone, but the good news is the quality of the parts since then have improved. My thoughts for this unit in plastic are the front nose contour looks close to a E60 electric from a Bachmann as do the front windows. An Atlas U30C chassis with the plastic frame would be a good starting point, though modifications for the steps and pilots would be many. The sides might come from a U30C shell or two. I think the cab side windows and the roof contour would be the most challenging although I formulated buying a few cabs and cutting the roofs off and splicing them all together to get a good roof contour.

The roof profile looks like the cab roof profile of the U and -7.

I am working with IHP on a custom project for producing Shells and frames for the P30CH in HO Scale. Its the only model left for me to complete my Auto Train for the '70's era. I had assembled custom 85'Auto Racks in Ph3, so to complete the train, I am going the custom route. I have waited as well as written to several model mfgs asking to produce the P30 commercially with no results.
Tom, could I get a copy of the article you scanned?

The last one in service was on lease to CSX to power their Geometry train... lasted a good bit longer than all the rest.
