Hi, A few more pics of the SD45 build. I bought Cannon & Co. doors to replace the ones that have cracked on the body shells........and I think it was from using denatured alcohol instead of 91% My question is........should I just cut out and replace the doors........or should I make replacement carbody sides with the new doors?

Wow the denatured alcohol put all those wavy lines in the shell?? That's so sad. Ive never seen damage like that. Those P2K shells are worth their weight in gold too. Can you sand the doors with out hitting details and smoth them out?

An update...... I had off of work for Easter Monday.........so Sunday and Monday I did some work on the new carbody sides for the 3 SD45`s I`m working on. First pic is one of three fireman`s sides. Second pic is two sides made. Last pic is the parts in order from left to right before assembly. Thats it for now.........just waiting on a pack of doors to come in so I can get the three sides done for the engineers side.

Nice job on the sides. They should look even better when completely installed on the shell.

Talk about an expensive and labor intensive project from using the wrong material to strip the paint!! Actually, after using the denatured alcohol, I am surprised you even have any usable body shell parts left and they didn't just totally disintegrate.
At least, by the time you are done, you will be a pro at scratch building hood sides from Cannon parts!!!
Over time though, I think the parts of the shells you didn't replace are just going to fall apart.......plastic and denatured alcohol don't play well. The denatured alcohol basically leached all the oils out of the styrene. Same thing happens to most body shells with brake fluid or Pine-Sol as a stripper. All those microscopic cracks will just continue to spread and you are going to pick up the model one day and it's going to turn to dust in your hands. I am not trying to put you off of your project.......just keep this in mind as you continue working on it.

The paint shop at the Birdsboro & Reading backshops is getting into gear.......3 noses and cabs have had a first coat of paint applied. The body shells are still being worked on.

What grab irons did you use? Did you have to drill holes?

Oh ok. I just drilled all the holes for grab irons for 3 gp38s and thought there were a set that didnt need to be drilled.
