Another quick update ;D The shell has it's first stage weathering (dullcoat and overall grime) Next comes the localised weathering and dust, then I will call it done. The chassis is painted and just needs re-assembled. The weather has turned nasty today so it's looking very tight indeed to get this one finished in time! I will prepare the NMRA paperwork this evening and hope for a break in the rain tomorrow so I can spray the last few coats.

Well I made it! After a hectic afternoon the GP40 is reassembled and ready for the show. Today I got the chassis back together, the DCC harness and chip fitted, the fibre optics shaped and fitted and the handrails painted and fitted. Overall I'm pleased with how it's turned out, although the weathering is a little heavier than I'd planned. I wanted to capture the feel of a hard working locomotive but this is a real grime queen! I will need to go back over the NW logos to bring them out a bit more as they have become a bit too lost in the grime. So, not bad for a budget build, and definitely a massive improvement over how it looked when I got it. Now I really should get back to my GP60 build!

WOW....that is one of the most impressive saves I have seen. Considering what you started with......it turned out GREAT!! I never thought that original paint was gonna come off......did you ever determine what it was?

No idea what the paint was, but I think the top coat was thick dullcote, the isoprol alcohol shifted it in the end though.

I've been using your method of stripping paint with IPA and I now have several parts of Kato shells ready to repaint. I have noticed certain colours are more stubborn than others, in particular Walthers CSX blue on the old coil car kits and Kato BNSF green!

Yeah I think the Kato shells need a good brushing to get the paint off. Try an old electric toothbrush, or a bristle brush attachment for a dremel.

I had success with a cheap Asda value tooth brush and bit of mandraulic power but it takes more than one attempt. I found the Walthers CSX yellow just flaked off but the blue is stubbor.
