Yeah they can be like rocking horse p** to get hold of! I even emailed Smokey Valley themselves for three sets of SD80 handrails and because they couldn't come up with a way for me to pay they just didn't reply to my second email!
I ended up on evilbay but it's hit or miss. I have a few sets enough for my current projects but not all of my loco's will have them as I find Kato handrails are convenient when they are the right colour.

The only thing that you may want to investigate is changing the horn to a Leslie 5 chime Drat, I thought I had the right horn on it now, it is a five chime one, but it may need to do if the right ones are out of stock everywhere!

One area of detailing where I am a complete novice is horns! I have no idea what is what, just buy whatever says NS on the packet

It's okay bud. The only reason I know is because NW, Sou and NS is all I model. Like I said though, the horn is currently all but impossible to find. You could always use that 5 chime you have on it now as a place holder until you can get you hands on the right one. I have two GP 40s sitting on the workbench now and that's all that is holding them up. Anytime I need to verify correct placement and types of horns, antennas, plows, MU connections etc., I always refer to rrpicturearchives.net. You can use NSlocos.com and NSdash9.com as well but most of the NW pics there are what NS modified after the merger in 1982

Great job on this rescue! I have to admit that after seeing what you started with I was skeptical but you have proven yourself. I think I would've taken one look at the "custom work" that was done and then started a search for a replacement shell. I just can't believe the paint stripped off so nicely revealing a diamond in the rough. You have my compliments. Your work has inspired me to look my my own rescue project. I would like to offer some unsolicited advice. Since you went through the effort of putting new Cannon fans and diamond tread, may I suggest adding Cannon part 1952, which is a turbo exhaust hatch. It is proportioned so nicely and in my worthless opinion would really finish the roof off beautifully. It is even see through! I am certainly looking forward to your next batch of progress photos, keep up the good work.

The ability of forum members here to turn sow's ears into silk purses (and sometimes better!) never ceases to amaze me. Makes me think about going back and reworking some of my early efforts. I would, but spare time seems to be on backorder at Walthers. Nobody else has some to sell, either. ;D

Last I knew, Dave was in the process of redoing the mold for that hatch, and said they were not available. He was supposed to let us know when it was back out again.

Thanks for the kind words guys I totally agree on the turbo hatch, but I'm going to call this one done now. It's so easy to keep on tweaking and adding, and I'm really trying to keep to the spirit of the cheap build before I go way over budget! I finally got some time to finish the remaining details on the GP40 rescue build, adding the high nose bell, all weather windows and the MU cables and pilot steps. I filled the small gaps on the nose and gave the shell a shot of primer ahead of its trip to the RPM table at this weekend Holbrook show. I've been brushing up on my airbrushing skills (airbrushing up?) and the process was a lot less wasteful this time, previously I've ended up with a lot of overspray as a result of being a bit too heavy on the flow. I'm pretty pleased with how it has turned out, no extra fixes required, aside from a small gap along the treadplate edge it is looking good and ready for painting. Easily my fastest ever build, and although it's not going to be a contest winner, it's definitely a real improvement from how it looked when I bought it. Next comes the paint and decals. Watch this space.

Thanks for the kind words guys. The build is going really well, I had the model on the rpm stand at the horsham show last weekend and got some favorable comments. Just waiting on a good clear day to shoot the shell with black paint now, then then I can decal it.

My air compressor is a Clarke model, the 'Wiz Air' it's a budget model but it does everything I need. I bought it second hadn in a job-lot with my Badger airbrush. Clarke don't seem to have an online catalogue, but there is a user manual for this compressor here: www.clarkeservice.co.uk/manuals/compressors/wiz.pdf

I thought i'd post a quick update on the build. I have the shell painted and the decals in place. Originally I planned to keep the unit as 1331 (as I bought it) but I found better reference for other units and 1371 won out as my preferred unit. I made a rookie error with the all weather windows and glued them in without glazing. It was a real job and a half to get the glass in place! Certainly a lesson learned for next time. The next step will be painting and fitting the handrails and weathering the shell. I will be giving the model a grimy dusty look as seen in the reference images, and the chassis will recieve basic detailing. I plan to have the model finished in time for this years NMRA at Kegworth, but in order to do that I will need to finish by friday. Watch this space!

I will definitely need to get it finished in time then! Its the usual story, everything comes down to the last second for these things. I have to get the model finished, weathered and the paperwork completed by friday so I can drop it off at the club for one of the guys to take next weekend. I got the handrails done this morning, so its full steam ahead to the finish line now.
