When you use a cannon sub base on say an atlas gp38 or gp40 sill, do you cut off the factory sub base and glue the cannon sub base down over the remaining portion of the sill thus just replacing what was there. I ask because cutting the sub base weakens the sill significantly. Also it looks like you cant add much reinforcment due to the raised portion of the frame that fills in the cavity under the sub base.

On the old Atlas/Roco shells, yes. On the new ones, I don't know. Once you glue all the parts together it will all stiffen up. I've cut the new Atlas GP38-2 down and glued a wide cab on with no problem. You can see in the pic I cut the steps off and replaced them with brass steps, so my sills got pretty thin without breaking. I've been doing these kinds of mods for 30+ years though.
