I have done some research, watched some You Tube reviews, even seen both MTH and Athearn SD70ACe's at my club, but from an ease of access point of view, which, one is better?
I'm thinking about custom painting them, and adding Tsunami sound so of the two which will allow me to do with with the most ease?

The Athearn comes apart with very little effort, simply undo the couplers and two screws and you're in. Much better than some of the older models with all those clips and hidden fasteners!

I only have experience with the Athearn. I added Tsunami sound and kinda liked the factory sound a bit better, might have been speaker choice. Also when choosing a speaker you should take note of the fact that the brake wheel molding goes into the cab some so if you are measuring for a speaker box you can't use the full width of the nose (we are talking by a few hairs)

That's interesting to know, thanks. I have to say I'm disappointed with the volume and clarity of Athearn factory sound, I'm wanting to install my own to be able to choose a speaker myself.
What speaker have you installed?

I think I used a Locsound enclosed speaker, it was an oval one about an inch and a half long...I will open it and check though, I have done a few lately and I don't have the best of brains.

Unless you are modeling 3-rail S or tinplate, you aren't interested in anything MTH does.

Wow! That's damning. I thought they were supposed to be really good?

Unless you are modeling 3-rail S or tinplate, you aren't interested in anything MTH does. The MTH units run and pull quite well, and they put the knuckle-buster latches on the proper way. Athearn molded them upside-down on every door.

If you're going to install your own sound, and you want an MTH, keep an eye out for the DCC-ready units they ran. That'll be the best way to go, as you won't have to throw out their electronics after you paid for them. If you're going with Athearn, then you just need one of their DCC ready units.

The same counts for me I own 4 MRL ACes and they run perfect. In the last two months they run 400 scales miles without any problems. Cheers, Maarten

its funny that you have replied to this post at this time. I am currently having problems with a Custom MTH SD70ACe that I bought from evilbay from a member of this forum. It's been my biggest headache all year and doesn't run so I am awaiting help from my LHS!

Same as well, I have three CN Athearn and three CN MTH and the MTH is a little toy like and some details not to scale.

My first DCC loco was a MTH with sound. I have sent it back three times because of the sound board. I also have Athreans with tsunami that I would not trade for a million. That is my two cents.
