There you have it...more than you ever wanted. I hope you see just how far you can take your ideas.

just a quick P.S. note...
The cabinet on the side of the Revolution units is an EFI control cabinet, EFI being Electronic Fuel Injection. It takes a bunch of mods to make the diesel run clean. EFI, Processor control, split cooling with exhaust intercooler and exhaust particle sequestration. The only way to cheat is go to a shorter and larger bore 12 cylinder unit with the intercooler sitting where the 14-16 cylinders would be on a 645 or 710 block. That is basically what a EMD GP22ECO looks like in terms of set up. The trouble is space requirements. More cooling needs more space, hence the larger flares. If you want to cheat, then you have to reduce horsepower so that existing cooling space will suffice. In that case, you would have to go with the smaller block to provide for the intercooler exhaust sequestration system that requires the increased cooling capability. You could drop a 710ECO in a SD45 frame and get a variant of the UP SD59MX. That door just ahead of the radiator grilles is the intercooler/sequestration access point. A SD45 unit might produce 2500hp without radiator mods in Teir Two configuration. Would make a great transfer and hump power unit that way!
Just some random thoughts to add...

Wow! I have been thinking for years that maybe I am the only person with these kind of thoughts ziipping around inside my head but I guess not huh? This is great stuff, you really have put a lot of effort in and I have to tell you it gives me miles of inspiration! That SD44-9CAT looks just as enticing as your SD55-CAT and this sort of stuff is right up my street!
I have a quick question though, you got me thinking last night about the CAT re-powering and I am now considering the option despite having dismissed it earlier. What are the CAT prime movers designations, their number of cylinders and horsepower ratings as applied to rail motive power? I cannot seem to find this information anywhere and it would help me make a more informed decision.
When I originally concieved this idea I thought I might have to remove some of the long hood length and create a 12-645 powered loco to allow the platform to accomodate the new DB hatch. However a quick test showed that this wasn't required however, thinking about my next project (yes, already) I am considering using another SD45 frame and this time keeping the flared radiators for the reasons you have outlined but reducing to a 12 cylinder CAT prime mover and adding the EFI box that you mentioned and some other bits and bobs, maybe a PR30C exhaust scrubber section.
To do this though, I need to know a little bit more about the CAT prime movers so I know what I am putting inside. Can you help me on this one?

I like your thought process on this build! Also, I am kinda partial to it's designation as an SD40SE rather than SD40ES. Just my thought. Rick I chose SD40ES as I like the SD50S and its designation, however, as the core for this unit is an SD45 that has been re-built as an SD40E, and so has had a designation change, I added the S to indicate that it was shorter than the actual SD40E rebuilds coming out of Juniata. So rather than being a Short SD40 that is Enhanced, it is a SD40E that is short.

Well, this project has hit a mega stall! I was going to post on the WOMB board but here's the story.
Got as far as completing the DB compartment and then I cut out the traction motor blower. Suddenly it occured to me that with an angled traction motor blower this unit would basically look like an SD50/60 and therefore would be nothing exciting or interesting!
First I thought I could replace the removed traction motor blower with a C&C part that is the same as the one I removed fromt he Kato shell. Then I thought back to the ideas I was given earlier in this post and thought, maybe something compeltely different would be really rewarding!
So I am going to follow a new tack, I am going to do something along the lines of the above mentioned SD55-CAT and add those flared radiators that I was going to avoid, imaginere a CAT prime mover and move the exhaust hatch to the rear of the engine compartment and do something different around the inertial filter compartment area with some spare grill sections I have lying around.
Snag is I am at my girlfriends house, 230 miles away from home and the majority of the parts I have now decided I need! So if I can get them posted down to me this week I will continue and make a post on WOMB board so look out...

Reminds me a bit of those SD40M-2's that had their long hoods replaced with hoods from GP40's...
...I like it! ;D
