In my horse trading of engines and projects I've ended up with a brand new Bachmann Plus F unit chassis. I was wanting to make a phase 2 F-3 engine but I don't know who would have decent shell thats reasonably priced. I'd love to give a highliners shell a try but the costs are prohibitive for this project. I know Cary makes a metal shell but I haven't worked with one of those and I don't know if it comes with window glass or if the metal can be drilled through easily for detail mounting. Any thoughts?

Have you looked for Kato F3 shells on EBay? They can be had for the $10-20 range, phase I-IV. Also have seen Proto 1000 F3 shells for under $20 there.
I've picked up several new Kato chassis/F3 shell combos the past six months. None over $40.

Thanks I'll be keeping my eyes out for either a proto1000 or stewart (kato) F-3 then

I've picked up Proto F3s for under ten bucks on Ebay. They were included with some sets and were painted in UP, CB&Q and ATSF pinstripe. Look for sellers who don't know what they have - it's very easy to mistake the unit for the typical cheapy LifeLike F7, in the typical blurry Ebay photo. The giveaway is numbered number boards.

Another giveaway is the steam generator on the Back. Seems Athearn/globe added it on their F-7 and all the cheap toy makers copied it
