I am starting to work on a new kitbash for a fantasy railroad, an SD70I for the SPSF. I have determined that the next number series to be used for 6-axles in the SPSF system would be 8000; thus, this will be numbered 8051. The SD70Is could be the first new 6-axle power for the SPSF, or it could be the C40-8Ws, so this number allows for some wiggle room for that. For this kitbash, I am using an Athearn Genesis SD70 frame, shell, and sill. A Kato SD70MAC cab will be used for the isolated cab. And a Kato drive and Kato SD80MAC trucks complete the drivetrain. Here are a couple early photos. Next is to wrap up some details, then I can start painting; or, I could work more on the motor.

I am looking forward to seeing what it looks like... should be interesting to say the least. I am surprised I don't see more in regards to the SPSF being modeled... it would have made for an interesting operation... just hate that it didn't happen...
In light of the routes that the Espee has shouldn't the model be a SD70TI? Just a thought...
I had forgotten that SP had SD70Ms that were not tunnel motors so it probably would have been a stretch... but still would have been interesting...

Thus far, I have one SPSF locomotive (a B40-8) and a handful of freight cars. They really add some color to the layout! My original plan was to model a GP60 in SPSF since SP and SF both had a lot of them, but I got to thinking that a widecab 6-axle motor would be more interesting.

I like the SPSF paint too. It took a lot of restraint to not order one when Atlas released a SPSF GP39.

Today I finished the motor for this project. It's basically a scratchbuilt motor, using parts from different sources. The frame is Athearn and everything else is Kato. I put a Digitrax DH165IP decoder in it. It runs really well!

The what if stuff is cool. If I had the money I would do some things like that. Like what if chessie stayed around and got the big GEs or EMDs, or other roads like the rock or MKT.

I have a Kato frame but can't seem to get hold of trucks, occasionally Genesis ones show up at a reasonable price and I have wondered if they fit?

That is a CHOICE Dash, really that is a beautifully rendered model! Of course it's my favorite model of GE locomotive next the the U23B. : ) Aside, I wish that Microscale produced an SP/SF decal set of the bolder more italicized font style, you know, like the lettering on an Athearn GP-50 road #3828 or GP-40 road # 7672.

I am surprised I don't see more in regards to the SPSF being modeled... it would have made for an interesting operation... just hate that it didn't happen... Funny story about the SPSF merger... One of the Democrats biggest criticisms of the Reagan administration was that Liddy Dole's DOT served as a "rubber stamp" for airlines and railroads instead of a regulatory body. The Northwest-Republic merger, for example, left 80%(!) of Minneapolis-Saint Paul's flights in the hands of Northwest Airlines. Presidential candidate Walter Mondale opposed the merger, and was livid when NW-RC was approved by the DOT. Mondale's allies in the DOJ and ICC saw that SP-Santa Fe was going to be the railroad equivalent of the Northwest-Republic merger, and decided to stand up to Dole by saying 'no' to SP-Santa Fe. It also didn't help that Ben Biaggini (and most of the SP board) were friends of Ronald Reagan and the California Republican Party (which made the Reagan administrations willingness to turn a blind-eye to the competitive issues posed by SP-Santa Fe all the more suspicious). In the long run, however, I think the SP-SF merger would've been better than what we have today. Why? SP-UP was far more monopolistic than SP-SF ever was, mainly because it left one railroad (UP) in control of the "chemical coast." If SP-SF had happened, Conrail would probably still exist, and we'd have six major railroads instead of four. Anyhow, this rant is now over - I hope I didn't stir up a hornets nest by bringing politics into this.

Interesting story there Jack. Well, back to the model; I finally got around to making some progress to the shell, about a year after the initial start. This has now morphed into what I call an SD75IS. It's basically a progression on the SD75I, if EMD kept making them for the Santa Fe, and it has a split cooling radiator assembly. Just need to add a few more details and it will be ready for paint!

Hey Eric how about sharing some of your other painted Kodachromes with us if you dont mind.
When they first introduced that scheme I couldnt believe someone would use red and yellow together but as time has gone on I have learned to really like this scheme. I hold it up to the current BNSF scheme though, it looks awesome when it is brand new but once it gets all dirty it just doesnt look good anymore.
If your done with them put them in the finished section. Thanks...

Wow that is pretty sharp. Kinda different with the smaller lettering on the sides, but nice. Its going to look much better once you get it all together.

Thanks! This is the SPSF Railway's "modern" paint scheme with the same kodachrome warbonnet, but a new nose logo and smaller logo on the hood so that it fits better with the more confined space of newer locomotives. It also utilizes a modern font for the cab numbers, similar to other railroads. Highball Graphics printed these decals. The other three kodachromes I am currently working on have the more traditional lettering; I'll post those in the Finished section when I am done with them.
