If anyone's going to kitbash one they'd better hurry up...the Rapido model is coming out sometime next year. Funny story about something similar that happened to a friend of mine...... While he was living in Ontario he was running his LRC coaches at the show. He had built these a number or years ago from the old AMM flat cast kits. He cut out each individual window and recessed them as on the prototype and added every other conceivable detail part. When Jason showed up he asked my friend how he liked the new Rapido coaches. When my buddy told him they were the AMM model Jason told him that he should throw them out because the new cars are much better. Point of this with relation to the thread: Its amazing what one can do with some scratchbuilding and other than underframe piping (which no one sees anyways) I suspect that this model will be able to run along side a Rapido no problem!!!

No sense throwing them out, if Jason can't tell the difference.

I look at it this way, while Rapido's FPA4 will be awesome in all regards, it will be over $200 for the DC version, and since I already have a Proto superdetailed one, I've just saved myself $200. My FPA4 will no longer be allowed to go to the prototype meets anymore for obvious reasons, but on the layout who cares? IIRC, Rapido's first release of the LRC coaches had tight axles and 1 engine struggled to pull 4 coaches, so in actuality, Your buddy's AMMs 'ran' much better than the Rapidos!

But it takes a diesel detailer to build one before it was released as an RTR. So to me I would sooner see yours then a rapido one. Not that rapido doesn't do great work. I just like the effort that goes into a model. On another note I'm building one as well. I am using the MBE fuel tank. But what DA filters do I use?

What I originally meant was it would be a lot harder to put x-acto knife to shell after they're released - when you've walked by the LHS's shelves and seen the Rapido units on display. I helped Rapido in the R&D phase of the FPA4 project (as well as with the GMD1) and they're going to be interesting models, to say the least... ...to say nothing of that American locomotive they mentioned will be released in the future.
