Well I dragged this one out to finish up, it needs it's wipers and some touch up on the handrails. This started out as a Atlas classic FEC GP7 that I picked up for $20.00 plus maybe $50.00 in detail parts. So this is a cheap build for sure. Parts added include grab irons air horn antenna sun shades fans Precision Scale spark arrestors m.u. stands m.u. hoses Air line bell side of the hood speed recorder M V lenses EMD number board donor windshield Athearn Blue Box #58 KD's Erik

Dude this thing is awesome! Subtle weathering and all! Way to save an old workhorse man, this turned out beautifully. It would look real good on a module or something. You should snap some picks on a layout when you can. Nice work!

Looks great, Erik. Love seeing those chop-nosed geeps, makes me want to try doing one myself. The weathering complements the model well, too.
Cheers, Peter.

Great looking model , I always wanted to make a Conrail Low nose GP-10, I was wondering what did you use for the headlight housing and new front cab windows?

Hi geep567,
Thanks for the complements, I used a Precision Scale EMD number board set #3986 and glued it the cab. Then built up the top of the number board with .40 styrene strips, then trimmed and sanded the styrene to the shape of the cab.
For the front wind shield I cut it out of a old Athearn EMD cab or you could use the insert from Desplaines Hobbies #DPH2005.
If you have any other questions, just ask!

Just wondering, would an Atlas SD26 cab work?

Yes it would, last time I checked Atlas only had one piece wind shield one in stock.

That's an awesome model, c415! Seeing your model reminded me of the one I did a few years (well, more like a decade) ago. I didn't add quite as many detail parts as yours, but sounds like the source (Atlas classic) is the same.

This is beautiful well detailed model......having said that there is a problem.....the numbers are not right. Microscale #s are the wrong size. if you get just 1 set of Accucals, you can number almost a whole roster of MEC stuff. food for thought....

Erik,
Hi, I know I'm asking this quite late after this post was created, but I've just come across this thread. Can you recall or do you know the parts list you used to create your low nosed MEC GP7? It's a real beauty and I want to attempt a model of this in the near future. In particular, I'm wondering about the part you used for the spark arrestor. Did you use Cal-Scale part # 190-440 or did you just scratch build this feature?
Thanks so much, Preston
