I didn't realize there were so many details different between the "M" and "HR" units.

Hi, I have a couple of queries about these kits. First though, I am not a rivet counter, rather as long as the kit looks reasonable to what I am trying to build, I am happy. I just purchased the BCR M420W, the CN as built, and rebuilt M420W and the HR412. Excluding the HR412, the CN kits are somewhat odd. After checking photos (I checked every M420W on cnphotos.com), the Kaslo kits with one hatch on the right of the cab are numbers 2500-2529, 3500-3529. All other M420W's have two hatches on both sides of the cab. The Kaslo as built M420W has two hatches on each side of the cab so must be from the 3530-3579 series. On the rebuilt kit, there is only one hatch on the right of the cab, so it must be a rebuild from the 3500-3529 series. The Kaslo kit I received with the as built shell does not have the bolted on hatch and the door under the left inertial filter grille. Rather, it has a square hatch the same width as the filter grille that ends a scale 21 inches above the walkway. As I cleaned up both kits together, when I added the radiator block to the rebuilt M420W, it didn't look right. The block has a smaller grill area. I glanced at the IAIS M420 article and noted this kit has the same radiator block as my kit. I couldn't tell if it had the square hatch under the filter grille. So, did I get a M420R in a CN M420W initial series kit? Ian

CN made the radiator area bigger on the first group of Ms they received...this is as built www.rr-fallenflags.org/cn/cn2508ald.jpgand the rad shutter area is increased by CN some time later....not sure how many of the first Ms were like this, but later Ms came from the factory with the larger shutter area. www.cnrphotos.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=8766I built an As built CN unit and it seemed correct for the lower number series with the revised shutter size... It is possible that you got the wrong shell in your kit. Contact me off list, I think I can help...

Hi, I found a photo of P&W 2003 on rrpicturearchives. It was a high angle shot of the roof and the left hand side long hood. This shows the hatch under the left inertial filter grille, and the smaller radiator area on the roof. So a M420R body/kit was in a HL 11 CN M420W rebuilt kit box. Ian

I just picked up a pair of kits for the BCOL units--one A and one B--and I'm pumped to do something with them.
Did you use the AAR-type trucks from Atlas to power it? I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if the U-series FB trucks were the same axle spacing as the AAR road trucks.

no, use the AAR (alco) trucked U23B. The FB wheel spacing is too narrow.

I've had good luck parting out the leftovers from projects like that on HO Interchange and some of the forums like this. Wonder if there's any interesting U-boat bashes that would benefit from our extra shells

Got the shells in the mail today. Didn't realize they lacked instructions, but I'm sure Kaslo can help with that.
