This is an ex-Rock Island GP38-2...The hood is a rescue from Brian Banna...and Perry Lambert...The frame has been milled...it's sitting on Athearn Genesis Trucks right now...but it's an Atlas frame...with a custom 2600 gallon fuel tank.
The Model will eventually have the complete Cannon front end...and new Cannon interior...complete underframe detailing...and I may keep the genesis trucks under it so the gear ratio (12 to 1) is compatible with my GP15-1 fleet, also under construction.
It's sitting on an Atlas phase 1 Gp40-2 sill...since the steps are better than the earlier GP38/40...and I can use the Atlas handrails...the battery boxes have been cut off...and the deck is ready to accept the Cannon and Co. short hood assembly. It will be built with the roof un-attached...but otherwise a complete unit...for structural integrity.

A couple of other pix...the Cannon and Company Paper Air filter hatch is just on the hood for clarity....unless I decide to change engines and build a later MP unit with a large 3600 gallon tank...Which is entirely possible with Atlas' new Phase II Gp40-2 sill...it has the correct notched stepwells for later GP's.

Looks great Tom! Is this going to be painted MoPac blue or the yet-to-be-painted-over Rock blue and white?

Cannon front end being completed...The cab roof will be attached later...I am putting in the new Cannon interior with a full control stand...These are really nice!! It will clear the gear tower...but I'll have to cut down the weight. Still have to sand the short hood seams smooth...as it's on there for the picture.

Probably will get subtle weathering...since it will be an engine that will see duty in the Southern Illinois Coal fields.
It will have the typical treatment...but will now include a 3600 gallon fuel tank...Q fans (Athearn Genesis SD60-70) and the Atlas GP40-2 Phase II walkway. But, will instead get an 88" Cannon short hood now. I will still use the Atlas handrails...
Still using the Cannon hood on this one...but I like the Cannon angled air filter hatch as well...it fits this hood very nicely.

Well...Athearn changed the ballgame on me in regards to these projects...I'm now going to start with a Genesis GP38-2 as a basis for new MP GP38-2's. I have some Atlas drives that I am putting up for sale in the sale area... www.joppasub.com/GP38-2%20Project.htm
