The Louisiana Northern spun off from the KCS in 1985. During the 5 years of their start up they were struggling to keep th company going. They were going through lease after lease to keep locos for the railroad. In 1993 they got their first to locomotives Ex-Conrail C39-8,and a rebuilt GP50. They couldn't get them painted right away so they patched the units.
So by 1995 the LAN had 200 miles of owned track, and by now they had 10 locos, C39-8,GP50,3 GP40s,3 SD40s,and 2 GP38s. At this point the LAN was growing. By 1998 they had bought shortlines LNW,and ALM,so now they own 550 miles of track, and their fleet increased by 17 locomotives so they now owned 27 locomotives.
By 2000 the LAN was a different railroad. They went from no locos and bad track,to 30 locos and 132 pound rail.By now they took an order of 2 AC44CWs,and 4 SD70MACs with flared raidators. By now they had done a big yard called the Bradley Yard, and it had engine, car, paint, shops, and 11 yard,3 holding tracks, a wye,and a rebuilding shop.By 2006 the road had bought shortline Louisiana Southern, and they own 707 miles of track and they bought 5 SD70ACes. The Louisiana Northern Railroad is growing and maybe a Class 1 railroad one day.
