I'm looking for some detail shots (especially of the exaust areas) of the Caterpillar repowers that were experimented with in the 80's by ATSF, BN and CNW. It seems to be that there are very few photos out there of these units. The rest of the units appear to be pretty much the same (with the exception of the BN unit 6330 SD45 hood on an SD40-2 frame).
Can someone describe what the exhaust area looked even looked like?? I have heard "two side by side" stacks several times, but that is a pretty simple description.
I'd like to model these units for something different, but lack of information is holding me up!!
;D THANKS!! ;D

Bob,
Santa Fe's SD-CAT did have two exhaust stacks side by side. There is a photo showing them in Cinthia Priest's book "The Santa Fe Diesel, Volume Two: 1960-1995", it is on page 107 and shows the stack arrangement and it also shows the modifications to the blower bulge and the smaller radiator section.

Thanks for the information. Where can one find that book......hopefully it is not discontinued. If you have the book, would you be willing to scan or copy the photo for me to use as reference??

Sadly, the book is currently out of production, but you should still be able to find it in many hobby shops. It was published by Paired Rail Railroad Publications. Anyway here is a scan of that photo from the book. The photo was taken by Thomas Chenoweth. Dan

;D ;D THANKS!!!! It appears to be not too complex at all to model. Two square pieces of tubing at the normal exhaust hatch location. I really do appreciate the effort to get me the photo. Now I got to wonder if the BN and CNW versions were the same!!

Those are pretty cool. I do remeber reading about SD40-2 repowers, but don't remember where. I want to say maybe a SP tunnel motor?

Here is a BN SD40-2 repowered with a Cat. The BN also had a couple more SD40-2 with the flared radiators. Only those were built to run on liquid natural gas.

Anyone see the two "new" NS Cats built from SD50's? Now that would be interesting to see!! I have all the parts collected to build the BN 6330. Once I get a few of my started projects out of the way, I'll begin on it!!

Here is an N scale 6330 that I built 4 years ago.. I used a Kato SD40-2 and parts from a Kato SD45 shell. Sorry about the lousy picture. I built it for a guy and I must not have taken better photos 'cause I can't find 'em if I did!

Here is a better photo showing a better view of the side. The doors aren't totally correct, but I was happy with the way it turned out.
