That's a super looking job! Once you are finished up, this will be a job you will be proud of. The details are right where they need to be for an as delivered up to a mid 1980's 5020 class ATSF SD40-2 and the yellow paint looks to be a great match. Also, thank you for spraying the intake grilles a darker color. I've always thought that this really improves the overall look of just about any locomotive.
Once you get rid of the faulty pickup system on these older Kato SD40-2's and hard wire the trucks, they run like champs! I've got several of the reworked Kato SD40-2's that are the back bone of my blue and yellow 6 axle fleet on my railroad. I've also used the SD40-2 chassis for drives under kitbashed SD45-2 / SD45-2B shells.

Spartan, you've done a fabulous job on your model!
Can you share with us what you did to get your paint to match the Kato prepainted Santa Fe Yellow?
Also, which handrail stanchions did you use for the anticlimber?
Thanks for posting your photos!

and while you're at it Spartan, could you tell us if the antenna stands are made from brass? The corner bends look like it, kinda tricky to get that look from small pieces of styrene.

Hi Guys, thanks for the positive comments. I added a couple of drops of ATSF Red to a bottle of ATSF Yellow to get a close match, the front Anti climber Stantions are smokey. The RC Antenna stands are Plano ATSF stands with Details West small Sinclair Antennas, the plano parts are really good and easy to bend. The horn is the kato horn that came with the unit but I sanded it down and mounted it on a Details West horn stand with a small piece of Styrene rod to increase the strength. A locomotive Engineer friend of mine here in NZ loaned me an old copy of Mainline Modeler, which had a good prototype article on these units.

The SD40-2 units have been a long time favorite of mine and the "Snoots" are just icing on the cake. This is a stunning example of the 1:1 units.
Very well done.

Spartan, you may or may not not be interested in this, but I'd like to draw your attention to another discussion in this forum about a treadplate product, which is a decal, which you might be able to use to apply to the top of your anticlimber, to add a nice finishing touch to it. The discussion appears under the topic "DIESEL DETAILING DATA, TIPS, TRICKS AND TECHNIQUES :: Installing tread " , where several pictures are posted showing this product installed on a C-415 model. The treadplate decal is available from www.archertransfers.com. and can be painted after installation. The tread pattern may not exactly match the KATO pattern, but it may look more consistent to have tread on the anticlimber than to leave it plain. The decal should be easy to work with. Anyway, if you decide to try this product, I'd like to see how it comes out on your great model! Peter

Thanks for the heads up on the tread decal, it probably does not show in the photos but the anti climber has cannon tread installed on top, it is much finer than the Kato tread so is harder to see.

"The horn is the kato horn that came with the unit but I sanded it down and mounted it on a Details West horn stand with a small piece of Styrene rod to increase the strength." That's a nice easy trick I've done on my approriate models as well, only, I've used thin steel wire. The hard part is drilling the hole in the horn bottom, not the stand.... Great job!! Now I'm motivated to finish one of the three in storage! Hey Sammy, what specifically is the fix/problem? "Once you get rid of the faulty pickup system on these older Kato SD40-2's and hard wire the trucks, they run like champs!" I have a few Katos, and have had zero problems that I've noted with their operation(?). Thanks, Rick

Rick,
The first run Kato SD40-2's had tabs that came up from the top of each truck and ran through holes in the frame.
Those tabs were intended to make constant contact with a strip that ran down the inside of the top of the frame to and from each side of the motor where they ran up to the board. Eventually, the tabs that came up from the trucks would begin to loose contact with the motor strips causing intermittent pick up problems and very bad performance.
I fixed all of mine by yanking the pick up strip from the frame and soldering wires from the pick up tabs of each truck. Now they run like a Kato should.
