Daniel, if you can, try to get a KATO AC4400 shell as the KATO grilles will match the ones in your C44-9W shell better than the Athearn ones will. I think you will like the end results better with parts made from the KATO grilles. The style of the corrugations will match and look consistent. The KATO AC 4400 grilles have the correct sizes for the later phase 2 C449w shell.
Keep us posted. Looks like you've got a great start on your project.! Good luck!
Peter

Guys, I'm posting the progress w/ C44-9W. Peter, A kato AC4400CW is very rare in these days. I've been looking it since last year in Brazil. Thanks all for the past comments. Next Steps: Underframe details Handrails for C40-8W (looks the same to this model) by Smokey Valley Any comment or sugestion would be nice. Daniel

WOW, that is superb, Daniel!! My only suggestion is to replace the chains on the end platforms with something more to scale, otherwise, you have done some beautiful work!

Robert, do you have any suggestion?
What about Aline ALI-29222 (40 links per inch)?
Thanks.

Are you replacing the Kato grabirons or reusing them? They always seem excessivly thick in photos, but I dont think I've ever seen them in person to judge.

Mike, I'll try the original grabs (the lateral ones), once the original shell holes doesn't fit Smokey Valley stanchions. I want save some time not retooling it.
Robert, a dealer has the Aline chains in stock here in Brazil. Next saturday I'll get it.

very nice. that looks like it was a lot of work to fix the grilles under the radiator. what did you use to make the castings?

Diesel, for the castings I use grilles molded by a friend of mine from hobbytec.
Damian, I always use Dupont automotive paint. A primmer is needed, I use an automotive one for plastic details. Two friends of mine give me those tips (Fabiano Louzada and Luiz Carlos Felice), they have a lot of experience on model painting.

Dan- Great work, but what's your method for using the Dupont paint from start to finish? Any tips or tricks? I'd figure the pigment wasn't fine enough for model applications, but it looks great anyway!
