Who wants to join me and Freeze Frame their railroad hobby in the year 1980? C'mon...Cabooses (cabeese?), No Ditch Lights, No Freds (rear end markers) Times are getting a little hard in 1980, a small Regional like the River Run needs some run through partners to bridge traffic with. We haul kaolin clay, bricks, coal, auto parts and rubber products, and military armlements from two arsonals. The northern interchange starts east of Cleveland in River Run Ohio with Norfolk & Western and Conrail, south to Akron/Canton interchanging with CSX, coal at Barrs Mills then to interchange with N&W and CSX at Harmon/Justus/Brewster, then through the Sugar Creek Valley to points south at Zanesville and interchange with CSX again. We also have secured a 99 year lease on the Mingo Route and Carrolton Southern from Canton to Mingo Junction and interchange east into West Virginia. Northwest from Run Junction to the Ford Plant in Avon Ohio via The Ohio & Chester Creek Railroad.

I'm pretty much already there... LOL
Ditch lights were installed on CN units though!
I'm waiting for when the Fresh Cherries K-cars come out in 1/87. My era will be firmly set in 1981.

I'm afraid you're about 11 years too far into the future for me, Randy. 1980 is the cutoff date, 1969 is acceptable to me, that would put me back to a senior in highschool though.

From what I remember, CSX was simply a holding company formed in late 1980 and was not to become a railroad until 1986. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Bob

WEll.....I *suppose* I could accept 1980...of course, I was 4 years old, and what I knew of trains was that they were big and PC Black and ConRail Blue... And a "THE ROCK" painted Model Power RS11 powered trains around my ping-pong table sized layout in the basement! (I started *really* young in this hobby/profession/disease depending on how you look at it!)
I chose a "turn of the century" cutoff for my layout...that's right, diesels at the turn of the century! the year 2000...

I would say that I could put 90% of my stuff in your time frame (especially since I bought it then ) but the RG&S/KP merger has brought updates to the roster

Randy, when I started the current layout it was the very early 80's era, and slowly got moved up the ladder until it hit close to today. With all the modern day stuff available, it was just too hard not to go modern. But trust me, as some know, the burning desire to model that 1979 branch line in Indiana that is close to the edge of being pulled up, its still deep inside!
Now, as for what I was modeling in 1980.... Well, myself and Doc are close to the same age. I believe I had a 4x8 tyco trainset at first. My dad bought me a RS11 in New Haven paint to help out. About 1982 I got my lionel from my grandfather!

Not trying to move or influence everyone, I'm just looking for folks that would like to make a connection to the River Run in the late 70s or early 80s.

The CIOR didn't make its connection to the River Run until 1984 when Conrail finally let lose of the Panhandle.

Don't know if you've ever been to Morgan Run. It's one of those blue 2 bay steel buildings. Jerry built that shop where the old Wheeling crosses the old Pennsy Panhandle. When I start building my first module, it will represent Run Junction just north of Justus where the 2 former W&LE lines cross. My shops will be at Run Junction in the Walthers building that came with the EMD prime mover. So, I guess if there is a shop at Morgan Run it will belong to the CIOR. If an agreement can be made the CIOR will have running rights over the entire River Run system, as does the Norfolk & Western.

1980 is a little too new for me! My roads, as they will be modeled, will be based in the 1973-1976 timeframe. Milwaukee Road was still running a few RSC-2's and Baldwins in the area, CNW was running it's Alco fleet there, and the incentive-per-diem boxcar fleets were starting to show up. Big Alco's were still very common in regular service on many roads, and Baldwins were hitting the used markets. Most common modern power seen was the SD-40-2 and U-30-C, Amtrak was running a veritable museum of passenger cars with both new and old engines, and Conrail was just about to be invented.

I moved my time era to 1988 (early Norfolk Southern) so I could have some Southern diesels roaming around. There will be some GP-40Xs, and a GP-50 or two running around in the Tuxedo scheme.
