Ok, I guess this would by my official first post on a locomotive project, so here it is. This is KRR 802, or what will eventually be KRR 802. Its a shell Ive had for a while now and after seeing iory87's post on his GP38-3's which were rebuilt GP40's, That gave me the kick I needed to decide on what to do whith this particular shell. So, I plan to do the same in rebuilding this GP40 into a GP38-3. Im still making a parts list and will hopefully start collecting parts for this very soon. I got this shell in a trade and its for sure in need of some TLC, it wasnt in as good of shape as I was told so its been stripped down to what I can keep, I think. I also plan on re-soaking it in 90% ISO to see if I cant clean it up a little better I do have one question as Im not sure how to approach it. I found a crack in the pilot, starting on the upper right cornor of the coupler pocket and going up and across the walkway almost to the nose. Any tips on how to fix that? I thought about glueing it but I thought I would ask first.

Mathew, IMHO, you could cement it with a good styrene (Tenax, etc.) cement. I have made many such frame repairs and they have held up quite well.
Make sure you have it lined up, clamping it if necessary to close up any gaps, and apply the cement from behind the pilot. If the joint doesn't hold, you can put a thin piece of styrene behind the crack to reinforce it (dry fit to make sure it will clear the frame).

I agree with modelmaker51's comments, as this is exactly how I had to repair a similar type of cracked walkway.

Im glad I was an inspiration for you, so this is going to be a Kiamichi GP38? As KRR is the Kiamichi's reporting marks?

Actually, its going to be part of my freelance RR, Kentucky Regional Railways. I never really looked up the reporting marks to see if they were already taken lol.....

interesting... a rebuilt GP40 to 38. I like these. but are you really gonna try & keep that under $100? The Atlas model alone is usually around 100...

Im going to do my best. I already had the shell (obtained in a trade) & most of the parts needed. The biggest issue I had was finding a complete drive & chassis, which I managed to find a used one for $30 and it will be coming with a shell as well, supposedly broken in 7 places but Ill have to wait and see. I still lack a few details but I think I can do it...... Once I get everything together Ill tally everything up and see where my cost ends up.

Wasn't expecting that!! Well, I thought I had found a drive & chassis but I guess I was wrong. For reasons unknown, my money was refunded (thankfully) so Im back to needing a drive & chassis. I had sent emails to both the seller, and the paypal account to which I sent the money with no response of why, from either. Oh well, at least I got my payment back and I can still get parts for the shell, which as soon as I get a couple of days off from work to clear my head, I plan on ordering them.
