I've just purchased an unbuilt Rail Power Dash 8-40B kit, it comes with sideframes and all the necessary detail parts, but the instructions simply say the chassis is suitable for 'Athearn' drive parts.
Can anyone tell me which particular Athearn locomotive motor/trucks will fit this kit? Would a cheap old GP9 kit do the job, or is it a very specific donor engine I require?

Id go with a newer RTR motor with the DCC board. You can get them on evilbay reasonable. Any should work, just need the correct splines.

I think the railpower frame worked with any of the Athearn short wheel base drive components. I just threw a Walthers Trainline frame and drive under mine though.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm thinking a rtr GP38 drive and trucks might do the job? Should be fairly easy to pick up on ebay.

Yeah I've got the complete kit, the frame and the truck side-frames, plus a handrail kit and some flush glazing. I got these parts as a job lot on ebay for a very reasonable price. I've just picked up an Athearn U33b to use as a donor locomotive for the trucks and motor. This build is going to be fun, I just need to get my current project finished first.

I have 2 of these kits. I think that the wheelbase is longer than the 4 axle UBoats. I recall that I bought a donor BB. The drive shaft will have to be replaced i don't know the P/N. The universal joints both have female fittings on them. There is an individual shaft that connects them. I think that his arrangement is for one of the SD kits, probably for tunnel motors. I think that I remember having to slightly shorten this long shaft.

I have actually changed my plans a lot for this build, I am going to convert the 8-40b into a 8-32b in NS scheme, I have picked up a cheap Atlas to use as a chassis. My GP38-2 build is nearly finished so perhaps I will get on with the 32b next (why is it that the projects always pile up quicker than the work gets done!!).
