Hi Guys,
I have a rather dumb question, but I want to ask it anyway.....
Is there a general rule of thumb for what size wheel goes on what type of car? Of what I know, most box cars have 33" wheels, most covered hoppers have 36" wheels, how about others? Gons, flatbeds, intermodal, hoppers, tankers, etc. Whats the best way to know what goes on what?

based on the tonnage. Boxcars generally are 33, covered hoppers 36, autoracks 28, some intemrodal sets are mixed 33/36 or 38/36.

I always thought cars over 100 tons are generally 36" wheels, with the rest being 33".

Don't auto racks also get 28inch wheels?

The 4 wheeled front runner stand alone spine car also run on 28's, but they're not used anymore. I have seen 33's mounted in 100 ton trucks on a boxcar before. Also its more prototypical to not have the couplers perfectly lined up with each other, but for reliabilities sake, I can overlook the proto look.

I knew there was a reason I didn't fix all of my coupler heights to exactly match

Check your era as to what you are modeling as alot of rail shops have gone to all 36" wheels on the equipment for weight reasons (present day, note check photos and shop resource data).

Back in my trainwatching days around Orlando in the mid 1980's, I used to see many Trailer Train 89' piggyback flats with both 33" and 36" wheelsets in the same truck. Occasionally there would be a 28" with a 33" but not very often. Large Mike

One additional tidbit - articulated well cars like the Gunderson Maxi III have 33" wheels on the trucks at either end of the 5-unit set but 36" wheels on the trucks under each articulated joint.
You really have to check out each car, if possible. There are 100-ton 50' box cars with 36" wheels, and even Canadian grain cars with 38" wheels.
