Hey Guys, When Athearn came out with the IC SD-40's, I never did like them. With the horn and sunshades being black and I didn't like the orange. So I started to do a pair for my own. This pic is of one of the models all ready for some primer: IC%20SD40%206001 by ICRR 3067, on Flickr

With an update, the unit was primed with Mr. Surfacer, and painted using Scale Coat II, White and NH Orange. I came across a snag when using the Microscale decals the long hood "Illinois Central" and numbers on the cab were too light in brown almost making them a pink on the white long hood. Just got the new decals in the mail yesterday in the mail, going to work on them this weekend.

I never did understand why Athearn pulled the whole black sunshade/horn thing, although it probably played a good part in why I was able to pick one up on clearance awhile back.

@tim, that looks nice and clean. Do you install the fan shrowds before you primer?
-Also, are you and carlmarsico in the Elmhurst club I've heard so much of?

I was briefly a member in the Elmhurst club, but I never found the time to get down there to justify continuing a membership there. I figure I'd revisit joining a club when my kids are older and I could bring them along without fearing that they'd trash the place if I were to turn my head from them for half a second...

dan, I do put on the fan shrowds on before I paint them, at the time I took this the parts were backordered. I also was a member of the Elmhurst club, but I had a falling out with the club, and the layout was turning a little too "toyish" to me.

Tim,
Are you using Mr. Surfacer in a spray can or are you using it with a airbrush? If you are using a airbrush, what are you thinning the Mr. Surfacer with? Also what # are you using 500 or 1000, and what psi are you spraying at?
Thanks Erik

Erik,
I use the Mr. Surfacer 500 out of a spray can. The Mr. Surfacer 1000 I thin about 70/30 with Mr. Thinner and spray around 20psi.

Here is the model painted and the start of the decaling. Notice the difference of colors between the long hood and the cab numbers. The cab numbers is the right shade of brown. IC 6001 by ICRR 3067, on Flickr

Tim,
Have you thought of doubling up on the decal for the hood side to deepen the brown.
I do this sometimes for yellow pin striping on the side sills.

Tim,
Did you start with an undecorated model or did you strip it?
Just curious if Athearn is producing undecs in black plastic.

@ Brian,
They were both undecs. Athearn shipped them to me in black plastic.

@ Anthony, yes I will weather them but very lightly. Built date of '68 and I model '69 so not too much.
