This unit started out as an Atlas Dash 8-40cw BNSF #803 (H2). It's pretty clear that the loco is not yet finished. The wrong cab is shown. That is why it is not numbered. I just received the correct Dash 8 cab. Those pictures will follow. Paint is Tamayia, and decals are Shell Scale. Once I finish the cab, and finish detailing the trucks and under frame, I will post those pictures, and u can make me an offer... :-) I have a question for those out there who can help. Once I have painted the locomotive, and decal'd it, what is the next step in sealing my work? I was just going to spray it with "dullcoat", or possibly a mix of "dullcoat, and flat". Suggestions?

oh ok! lol, that flew right by me...
As far as finishing, spraying gloss coat before the decals will help the decals look seamless. Spraying dullcoat in the end will seal that and take down that glossy sheen. I think flatcoat might be much the same thing, experiment with them first and see which you like.

you're right! that's when NS got the -8s. I remember seeing them many times when I was at the NJ Transit train station in Elizabeth. They passed through mostly with auto racks.
es44ac is working to make this a nice unit, now he has to put a rush on it cause we're sssooooo interested to see those old Conrail units in fresh NS paint with some weathering...
Was there ever a 4 window cab for the -8s or was that not until the later -9s? Which cab is on there now if that's not the correct cab? can't really tell from the pic.

To "Diesel", From all of the prototype pics I could find, the correct cab for 8-cw has the high headlight, low number boards, and the 3 window cab. That's what I found for #8451, which is the number this will be. More pics by weeks end... Thanks for the replies!

A Gullwing Cab NS unit would be cool

I love how people don't read the description, then comment about the cab. Yes, I know when the d8's were acquired from CR, and LMS.

So the atlas 8-40cw has the incorrect cab period or the atlas #803 version you started with has the incorrect cab for a NS unit? Sorry if it was obvious to others but I'm not that familiar with the GE units yet. I'm interested in getting one of the atlas 8-40cw former CS units down the road.

Atlas does make the correct cab for the ns/cr/lms dash 8-40cw. In this picture I still had the bnsf cab on the unit, which is incorrect for ns. NS has low numberboards, low ditch lights, and high headlights in their 8-40cw's. The modern ge units (dash 9-40cw, es40dc) have high numberboards, high headlights, and front and rear ditch lights. I added the correct cab later on, once I found one cheap enough. The finished products are posted. U just have to look. I don't think it turned out too bad. Was not completely prototypical, but I like it.

Looks great to me. I looked at some more units and yes it is obvious when you know what to look for. Guess each RR likes theirs a little different.
