So, I have been checking out the Rail Yard Models website for a few weeks now debating purchasing a few of their kits. I've yet to build a Urethane kit, and I am wondering if anyone here has tackled one of these before. I have built a few resin kits in my day, and I am aware that they take some getting used to, quite a bit of filing and sanding, and sometimes a bit of swearing to get them to look right. But the kits produced by Rail Yard seem to be very clean, and just as good (if not better looking), than the usual plastic kits available.
However, reading their site, it says that Urethane is also heat susceptible, and can warp and the like. So, I am just curious as to anyone else's experience, pros, cons, etc.
Thanks!
John

Please take this as a friendly reminder, that The Diesel Detailer Forum is just that, for diesels. Please keep questions about general freight cars in the appropriate board down below.

Thanks Randy. I honestly didn't even see this subject area, and really was not sure where to post the question. Hence the reason I just posted it under general questions lol.

Thanks Jay. I wasn't aware that resin was urethane lol. I assumed they were two different things, seeing as most "resin" kits are advertised as "resin" kits lol. I almost assumed, prior to reading further into their website, that the kits were simply resin as that is what they look like, which as it turns out...they are lol. I think it was the fact that all through their website they advertise their kits as "urethane" with no mention of the word resin anywhere. So I assumed it was a totally different media.
Well guess that answers that question. Time to splurge! ;D

John, I have built a few of Railyard's kits and I can confidently say I think you will be very pleased with their products. The quality of the castings is such that you would swear they were plastic rather than resin if you did not know better. About the only sanding you have to do is the little bit of flash there is when you remove the smaller parts from the backing sheet. The only RY kit I have had problems with is the sulfuric acid tank car, and that is because I can't seem to get the platform handrails right, but that would be a deficiency of skill on my part, and not a problem with the kit itself, LOL
