While working on my U36B kitbashes I wanted to be sure that the long hood was square to the cab. I have always had difficulty in keeping things square when sanding and found the following addition to the NWSL True Sander to be most helpful. If this has been thought of before, my apologizes to the person who did it first. It is a simple poplar block of wood 5" x 3/4" x 7/8" screwed to the base of the sander with the nuts on the bottom recessed with a forstner bit . A smaller block was made so that the nose and cab piece could be trued up as well. The blocks were clamped to the base and then drilled. A machinists square was used to square the wood blocks while being tightened to the base. The aluminum block that comes with the sander was turned on it's edge so that the larger portion could be used to sand the shell. Clamping the sander to a table top while sanding on a shell was most helpful. I also used some .125x.250 Evergreen strips to get the shell high enough so that the rear mounting tabs could still be used when gluing the hood to the walkway. This gets the shell up from the base of the sander and still keeps things square. Just a thought I had and it worked out well. This could also be used with larger blocks for freight car kitbashes. I love those " A Ha" moments. Makes the times the brain won't shut off when you try and get some sleep real worth it. I hate this Hobby!!! Not really, just keeps me up all night sometimes thinking of ways to improve things/reinvent the wheel kinda thing. Peacedawg
