Yes, the GP-50 in that photo has the dash 2 cab and sub-bases. You can either replace the cab and sub-bases with Cannon parts or just cut the numberboards off the cab and use the Cannon & Company High Hood. If you can afford it, the 3 Cannon parts really bring an Athearn to life. Here is a shot of my Athearn SD40-2 with the Cannon Hood, Cab, and Sub-base kits. Here on my ROCO SD-35, you can see the Cannon & Company 35 Line Cab, Hood, and Sub-base....the hood is the same, but the other two parts are different from the Dash Two parts.

Yep thats pretty much the look Im after other than GP not SD. I see the difference in the subases now. Im struggling with seeing the difference in the cabs on the high hoods. The low nose are pretty obvious in the differences. Any tell tale signs? So the GP50s are essentially dash 2s?

Yes, the GP-50 are in the dash 2 line. The dash 2 cab has a plate that covers the whole upper side of the cab around the window, the 35 line cab does not.

I see what your saying now. Man I need a better book on spotting. The one I have doesnt mention any of these subtle details. You know of a good one? Is that a vent on side the #7046 photo i put in the link. And what is that on your first photo on the side of the cab just in front of the electrical cabinet? Its brass or at least colored that way.

The thing on my SD40-2 is a cab vent I liberated from a UP unit. Yep, that's a vent on #7046.

Do the Cannon short hood and long hood ends come with grabirons or do they have to be purchased? The photos on their website show them but doesnt say specifically.

I started my Southern RY GP-50 project tonight. That makes 32 projects I'm working on now. I've got the Cannon radiator screens, a sub base kit, a Dash 2 cab, blower duct, dust bin, and the high nose. Just ordered the intake screens and I see the one on the right side is shorter than the one on the left. Anything else I should watch for?

I've got them in my wooden train cases, in my display cases, and in my storage cabinet.

Hey nser,... now that you've noticed the difference in the BB details and the cannon parts (I remember when I first saw how much better the cab looked) keep looking at photos of prototypes and then back at your model. You will become way more aware of details and eventually be able to pick out what parts you need to do a job. -you'll also drive youself nuts once you realize the amount of small details you can tend to, -some free like cutting notches or drilling holes in the pilots if your prototype has them ect.
