Any ideas for modeling a SW1001 in HO? Reading had a bunch of these beasts, and there's no model available. www.rr-fallenflags.org/rdg/rdg2601ags.jpgwww.rr-fallenflags.org/rdg/rdg2612ags.jpgMy first thought was to start with an Athearn SW1000. Simply chop the cab down, and ignore the difference in the walkway height. I also considered melding an Athearn SW1000 long hood with a P2K SW1200 frame and cab. Any others? Nick

While doing some searching I came across this: islandmodelworks.com/SW1001.htmlDoes anyone have any experience with Island Model Works? From the picture, the detailing looks a little crude compared to the P2K and new Athearn releases. Nick

I've heard that was one of their earlier efforts and is in fact quite crude. You might be better off with the SW1200 + SW1000 for a nicer looking model.

That's what I was thinking. I also just ordered a copy of the May 1996 RMC, with an article about kitbashing one from an Athearn BB switcher.

While eagerly awaiting my RMC, I've been told the Athearn SW1000 hood doesn't fit the P2K frame without significant modification to the frame. However, the IMW SW1001 kit is made for a P2K S4 mechanism. So that gives me another thought. Possibly use an Atlas S4 frame and mechanism, with SW1001 hood and a Cannon cab.

I **may** be wrong, but I thought an SW1001's cab was longer than an SW1200/9 cab by about 2 feet?

Not only is the cab longer, the height is shorter by a foot. You would also have to modify the doors on both ends. You also have to shorten the back of the long hood and increase the angle going to the cab. The added length of the cab pushes to the front. This also means modifying the the cab base. The reduction of height was for clearances I believe.

Yup, the idea for using the low running boards, short cab, and old curved roof was clearance. Most of the SW1001s went to industrial and shortline users. Reading's were the only ones to go to a Class I.

After reading through the various kitbash articles, I decided to go with the Island Model Works shells. I have two shells coming, for the winter modeling season. The shells are made to fit P2K chassis. Most likely, I will mate the shells to Atlas frames/drives, to match my fleet standard.

Lots more work to use an Atlas frame. The Atlas S-series drives were built with a solid one piece frame and walkway combination which would need to be milled down quite a bit to use for this application. My IMW SW1001 shells arrived the other day. The detail is not the best, but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it might be.
With a little luck, I can acquire some reasonably priced P2K S units and begin my SW1001 project.

Just checked out the island models site...thought the picture was N scale cuz the shell looked very crude. Hope you can do something with it. Maybe with a sheet brass roof, and SW1000 parts you can jazz it up a bit...

Right now my plans are to remove the louvers and replace them with Archer decals add grab irons and the usual Reading details. Beyond that I'm not sure how much else to do.

Here's the Island Model Works SW1001 shell: Athearn SW1000: And the two side by side: Still unsure of how to proceed. I'm increasing thinking of grafting the front of the Athearn SW1000 shell to the cab and hood taper of the IMW shell. Nick

Man that thing is ugly...Burst my bubble as a viable shell for a CR unit...
May also want to consider Atlas MP15DC parts, rather than take a razor saw to the Athearn shell...
