Could you post a parts list? This technique could work with caboose marker lights as well using white LEDs and markers with colored lenses.

does that brass tube hold up the cars a little? one of the big problems is that these cars get stiff wheels and dont' roll all that well. When you're trying to squeeze out every ounce of power from AEM7s on the club layout grade, you can't really afford to hold the cars up any more than necessary.

I second the request for a parts list and/or diagram of the lighting circuit. I don't know the exact part numbers, but it looks pretty simple. Its a bridge rectifier that is taking in track power via brass tubes around the wheel sets. A resistor is placed in series with the LEDs to prevent them from burning out. In between the LEDs and the rectifier, a 4,700 uF capacitor (the largest you're likely to find in a radioshack) is placed in parallel, to prevent flickering by providing back-up power to the LEDs. I have a really horrible MS paint schematic of the circuit, but i'll only post one if you think you really need it.

Here's a schematic I drew up in EAGLE, a free circuit and board design program I've used.

It looks to me like using this diagram to wire the LEDs it will blow LPS 1 & 2 with 14 volts applied directly to them.
