That is a pretty unit, and the paint match is really close. What does the "u" signify?

That's a great looking SD45!
The "U" stands for "upgraded" and it looks to me to be a early to mid 80's version since it's got the snow shields, smoke deflectors, rotary beacon and class lights.

Very nice job! Are those the rtr Athearn fans too? Hi, the fans are Cannon & Co. The model has C&C, DW, DA and A-Line details on it. It has a Loksound decoder with the SD45 prime mover sound.

Yes, Sammy is right. The date is year 82, this unit was matched with two SD45Bs (5501 and 5502) and another SD45u (5376) on a ABBA set, I guess for publicity snap shot purposes.

Once again, very, very nice looking! I love ATSF SD45's about as much as I like the Espee's SD45R's!

Another good job. The smoke deflectors and snow shields make a standout engine stand a little taller.

Kiro, nice job! I love a unit with the deflectors, just makes it a little different. i think it's nice when you can just add some details to a factory painted model, have it look good and fill an important spot on the roster. so, what was the paint match? was it floquil out of the jar? I have 4 bluebonnets and each one is different but i'm still curious.

Hi Diesel,
I´ve found that for Athearn RTR Floquil ATSF Blue / Reffer Yellow are the most accurate matches. Blue is straight from the jar, RY does not, just add some drops of Reffer White if necessary because in between color batches the models have some differencies in shade. Since Floquil paint is very flat, add also some drops of high gloss (10%).
Hope this helps.

thanks for the paint tip Kiro. between the close match and some weathering, it'll probably be pretty seamless...

So these weren't CAT rebuilds? Similiar to BN's builds? I know BN had 1 or 2 SD40-2s with the snow shields and deflectors, but they were CAT builds............am I mistaken?
Either way, the model looks beautiful..........thanks for sharing! I can't wait to see the consist!
