I finally figured out how to tape these units up so I could paint them, and now they have paint and decals! Yay! they will be getting more decals, but for now, here's a peek at them! They've turned out pretty good so far, more work to be done stringing MU lines and air lines and brake rigging and such, but for now, this is where they are. What do you think? Kevin

Very nice work on my favorite type car. Athearn sure is way off base with all the foobie schemes they put on these cars, it's nice to see them done up right.

Hi all,
The whole trick to taping them off is cutting really, REALLY thin strips of tape, and building them up from there. I started with 1/16th" and found I could wrap it around the end of the car without it crinkling up on me. After that, I did the sides with the usual wider strips and things actually stayed in place. That crinkling problem had this project on hold for a long time.
As far as measurements go, I had two aids in that. The first being the data sheet from the Microscale fuel tanker decal set, and the second being an article I found in the April 1998 Model Railroader that describes building one of these. Between the two, you have most of the info you need, though I did have to use the photos to get the height of the green band positioned right.

Very cool, I still would like 1 or 2 more, hard to find these cars. Are you going to be detailing these out at all?

Kevin, outstanding bro! I have wanted to model these for quite some time now, I have great picture of one of these sandwiched between a couple of SD40-2's and it looks sweet!!

@ riss2509: Yes, I am planning on running the MU hoses on both ends, the lines down the length of the car, the fuel pipes and valves, and adding the MU connectors and conduit down the side of the car. Brake rigging as well, since they'll be running between some detailed SD40-2's I'm working on. The ladders are due for more paint and there are more decals yet to put on. The trucks are due to be swapped out for some three-spring units, and the end steps need to be redone. There's more work to be done, but I was so excited they were finally painted after a year in the box that I had to show them off!
