I'm doing these up for Mathew, who is a member of this board (NSCentral). They're from the last run of Athearn BB SD40-2's. It appears that they were already someone else's custom project, because they have grabs, lift rings, speed recorders, Cannon noses, and some drybrushed weathering already added. One of them was renumbered. They were both missing some handrail sections, one didn't have any numbers on the rear numberboards, and the weathering wasn't all that great. Anyway, Mathew wants high hoods on them and detailing to bring them up to today's standards, Cannon walkway tread included. They will be done in his freelance road's scheme. Here they are pre-stripping.

Took a while to get the paint off.... I think it was hermetically sealed in dullcote!

First I tried 91% alcohol... when that did next to nothing, I broke out the Scalecoat II stripper. That always does the trick, but I use it as a last resort since I've had it eat a few Kato shells before...

As long as there is a question about stripping agents...
I found some stuff that I like better than 91% alcohol. It is called Purple Power and it does a super fantastic job. I have had a few small detail items want to get soft if left in too long, but that is the trick with any of this stuff... I have no idea how it works on Kato shells.

There will be this weekend. I just got all the parts in for them a few days ago. My school's been embroiled in a massive policy debate/student rebellion, so I haven't really done much modeling this week! (See the coffee room board, "I HATE COLLEGE" thread)

Thanks for the compliments, guys. They got their MU hoses this afternoon, and should be getting their drop steps and MU stands tonight. Not that there's a whole lot to add, but I'll post some pictures tonight anyway.
Next week, they'll be getting a coat of Santa Fe red.

Here they are ready for paint (only additions since previous pictures are MU hoses, drop steps, and MU stands). They'll get a coat of primer this coming weekend, followed by a coat of Santa Fe red.

This is the concept for the paint job: Well I have to be a fan of that, Almost perfect, the letters are wrong, the colors are reversed, and the nose is too high, lol, but you are coming aroud to my way of thinking. Looks good seriously, I would play with the font more, and how about creating a herald. Again, Looks Great!!

I would make a herald, but I need to be able to do something with decal sets that I already have.... any suggestions for a decal set that has a "K," "R," and "S" large enough for a good logo?

Get some blank decal stock and have fun, that is why he is freelancing, correct? Get some white stock(cost a few dollars), print a red border, clear coat the decal sheet(you can use rattle cans) cut and apply. microscale HO lettersets are too small and g-scale even if the font was right are too expensive. are these units to current for customer, or back dated units, the reason I ask is I assume he has other units that he wants to match. If the customer sees this a just a concept I would offer a few suggestions to him if I were you, if this is set in stone letter type then the font appears to be "genuine" bolded(from paint program) not sure what size, personally if it were me I would go with "Gloucester MT Extra condensed" but use bold tool. Ks are tricky font wise because many appear lop-sided or out of proportion. Herald wise what does "KRS" stand for? what region? and what years?

And I have no idea what "KRS" stands for. I have some large lettering sets from Champ decals from way back when that I *think* should have enough letters left to do both of these engines.

Okay, here's the Champ font I'm using, in 1/2": And then I'll be using some smaller Microscale decals for the ends.
