Well, this is my 1st. post of some scale model projects that we have on our web-site pages. Here's a series of images of a Kadee* 70 ton Cov. Hopper. I'm really not a scale model person by any stretch. These are samples of very lite & subtle weathering tones that can improve the look of any rolling stock model(s). The material I use are very inexpensive, and with a little practice, easy to do. I use only some very fine Black Graphite Dust, Colored chalk, Charcoal Pencil(s) and small cans of Testers* Flat-black, Rust-color and Dull-Coat. This techinque seems to work, it brings out the model(s) subtle details & light shadows, other-wise sometimes hidden. All the models I have completed are shot on, what we refer to as a "Photo/Image Prop." a some-what very small, detailed 18" X 20"... walk & shoot-around display. BTW, I don't have any type of model layout, and have never run any of this stuff. However, Model Manufactures & NMRA folks who visit our Model Page(s) seem to enjoy what they see. Follow this Image Link: www.thepwvhiline.com/PullmanStandard70TonCovere/PWV_CovHop_1955_4Web.htmlEnjoy! PWVJer.

It looks good, one bit of advice on the trucks with friction bearings, though. The wheels seem to get black and oily from the grease. mike h.

Bxcarmike, HMmmm, never gave that a thought. What kind(s) of wheel weather things should I try? Got any Pics & Tricks? I have not done any major car-kit-bashes/paint for at least a few years. Completed only a few "Shake & Bake Out of the Box" pcs. for our web-site review. So, I'm a bit out of the "weathered look" loop. We have about two dozen or so pieces of P&WV rolling stock (Brass and Plastic). All the Trucks & Wheel sets in our collection look about the same... I think they could use a bit more work!
Thanks, PWVJer.

PWVjer. I usually paint(airbrush) all my wheelsets with grimy black, that sets the main tone, then I give the axle centers some dry brushed oily black. I also use oily black on journal boxes. Like your weathering, light and subtle. Check Fallenflags web site, look for older car pics, you get some great reference ideas there. regards mike h.
