Hello, I wanted to post some pics of my first try at weathering / detailing an engine. I am currently building a modern CSX / NS railroad in a 12x17 room. (well, actually I'm building the room as of now!) While waiting, I figured I'd get an early start on my fleet. This is a new Athearn unit. I went with the most recent paint scheme on my first unit so that there wouldn't be a terrible amount of weathering to do. Just some nicks and scratches here and there, dirty windows, and a general griminess. I added what I feel are the bare minimum in detail parts. Since the photos, I also got around to adding the spare knuckle on the rear. I used a combination of airbrush, dry brushing, and powdered pastels. Please feel free to KINDLY critique and, remember, this is my first attempt.

Pretty Sweet for a first attempt, especially the rust streaks and scrapes on the side sills and roof. I prefer the more subtle weathering techniques and you have that in spades! Did you add the wipers at the same time you put on the spare knuckle?

Looks great! I like the sidesills as well. BTW, you need to mask your windows when you airbrush even if it's a clearcoat because your windows are all fogged.

I have watched videos and read articles galore. you need to mask your windows when you airbrush even if it's a clearcoat because your windows are all fogged. That's actually intentional. I was going for a dusty / smudged look down towards tha bottom of the glass. Thanks again for the kind words guys!

I'd say you've done a pretty decent custom job for a first-timer! Keep us posted on future models as well.

I like the more subtle weathering as well. Your rust technique is realistic. In the broadside photo, the reflective stripes really stand out and look good. Nice job.

Hey guys thanks! The ditchlights are not functional as of yet. I haven't put a decoder in the loco yet, but will probably do the lighting at the same time.
The striping was made from 3M reflective tape. One of the same 18" pieces they use on the 1:1!! It can be seen in the foreground of the same shot.
