I decided to dig out a project that I had set aside a while back in hopes of finishing it off. A couple years ago I purchased an auction off Ebay of a "project SDP40" someone had been working on. When I got it, I found that it was a Athearn SDP40 shell, but it was cut in half lengthwise to remove the extra thickness. Who ever did the work did a very nice job. The only parts that had been added was one side of the cab sub base, inertial filter hatch, exhaust stack, Pre-84 rad grills (chicken wire), inertial filter grills, and plate over the steam generator area. The model also had the original ATH frame which had been milled down with it, but it broke in shipping and will need work. I will get into that later though. First the body details.
I did some evaluation on various SDP40 prototypes and I decided to do the TFM version as it has a notch in the nose like the EL SDP45's, which looks very cool. So with the decision made, I set about getting parts to finish the unit out. I added C&C 48" rad fans (center plated), 48" dyn brk fans, 40 series cab and cab sub-base, 81" nose, full width anti-climber (rear pilot), small front anti-climber, A-Line windshield wipers, DTW Nathan M-3 air horn, Tichy grab irons, DTA lift rings, and DTA headlights.
After adding all these parts with more needed I set it aside. I unfortunately came up with another hair-brained project that diverted my attention. So it sat like other projects have. I have to admit the draw of a new project is bad for me. I hardly finish things completely. I am working on keeping the focus now though!
Anyway, now that I feel like I just went through AA (I don't drink, but I can imagine though), I will be posting photos of what the unit looks like now before I continue with the project.
